While Spotted #Knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) may be a horrible, noxious, invasive exotic weed that you may get shamed for just posting pictures of, it is pretty even as a pavementplant rosette. This was shot on the Columbus medians in late January of 2020.

Poison hemlock (Conium maculatum), the plant that was used to kill Socrates, is in its rosette stage right now! That means it is the perfect time to use gloves to pull up the whole taproot!

Artemisia frigida (fringed sage) looks like little gray green balls in winter. When spring comes, the stems and leaves will extend.

Penstemon virens (blue mist penstemon) growing in a crack of a boulder. Last spring’s seed heads are present atop oar-shaped leaves. The leaves turn a deep red to protect from winter sun.

Berberis repens (creeping Oregon Holly grape) also tends to go reddish purple in the winter to protect against winter sun. Compact clusters at the end of woody stems will grow into bright yellow flowers in early spring.

Heterotheca villosa (hairy false goldenaster) has low mounded clusters of gray green leaves amid star-shaped dry empty seed heads. These leaves and stems will extend and elongate when weather warms in the spring.

Weeded #noxiousweeds at Eldorado Canyon State Park to ring in the new year. Looked at the phenology of #nativeplants to see where they’re at for this time of year. Everybody’s ready for spring, when it comes.
