A zigzag trail leads to the base of the Duncan Cedar. Sign from Washington Dept. of Natural Resources reads: "The Duncan Cedar, world's largest western redcedar (Thuja plicata). Height 178 feet, diameter 19.4 feet." Young cedars approximately 25 feet tall grow nearby.
A wide angle view of the Duncan Cedar, showing the entire tree. Most of the bark is gone, and the tree clings to life with a few live branches. The tree is surrounded by a thick forest of younger conifers.
For #ThickTrunkTuesday, the champion western redcedar known as the Duncan Cedar. Location is near Kalaloch on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. The tree was clinging to life in 2011 when I took these pics, and apparently it's still alive. See alt text.
