In 1894, a young heartbroken 20-yr-old #RobertFrost traveled to NC, attempting to hike through the #GreatDismalSwamp & later visiting the #OuterBanks. This formative, difficult journey inspired his later poem #KittyHawk & was recalled by the poet in 1961 as a significant, rebellious “tramp.”
As the day winds down along the Outer Banks, the sun settles low over Rodanthe, casting a deep and fiery glow across the horizon. The sky becomes a layered canvas of gold, orange, and red, gradually fading into darker tones as the light slips away. After a long shift volunteering at the 2026 Blackbeard’s Revenge 100, this moment feels earned—quiet, reflective, and grounding. The chaos of race day, the movement of runners, and the constant energy of the aid station give way to stillness and calm. The sun, perfectly suspended for a brief moment, feels like a closing chapter—marking not just the end of daylight, but the end of effort, service, and shared experience. In that pause, the Outer Banks reveals its softer side, offering a simple yet powerful reminder to slow down and take it all in.
Volunteered at the 2026 Blackbeard’s Revenge 100 Ultra on March 21, 2026, along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. While at the Pea Island aid station, I captured photos whenever runners came in.
