Want to restore oyster reefs? Find a site where they don’t wash away or become buried under the sand! Restoring once abundant oyster reefs in temperate marginal seas such as the North Sea is a challenging task. New research by NIOZ marine ecologist Zhiyuan Zhao and colleagues shows that it is necessary to consider the short-term risk that introduced oysters will become buried by shifting sediment or will be dislodged by strong near-bed currents. For restoration success, these short-term physical disturbances can be more decisive than longer-term water-quality conditions. The results of pioneering experiments at 32 m depth, were published today in the scientific magazine One Earth.

Many marine animals use oyster reefs to hide from predators and/or feed on tiny organisms there. These environments provide food for turtles, shorebirds, and valuable fish species. #WetTribe #TidetotheOcean #TurtleTuesday #OysterReefs

Shucking the past: Can oysters thrive again? Dredging and pollution devastated the once-bountiful reefs. Careful science may help bring them back.

"Like coral reefs, oyster reefs play crucial ecological roles, providing habitat and nurseries for other species and filtering vast volumes of water. They are essential in protecting coastlines and sustaining fisheries for thousands of years."
