I was delighted to co-host the workshop “What do we (not) know about
German colonialism in Tanzania?” together with @seitzramona.bsky.social at the #bfuturefestival
The discussions reflected how important it is to continue uncovering & rethinking shared colonial histories.

Yesterday marked 125 years since the hanging of Mangi Meli and 18 others, making a total of 19. Some of their remains, e.g. Mangi Meli’s skull, were taken by German colonialists and have never been returned to this day. #PamojaRT #GJHeritageWalks

My latest (in German) at @riffreporter.bsky.social :
Decolonial initiatives lose project room in Berlin’s Wilhelmstraße 92, which is about where in 1884/85 the Berlin Africa Conference took place. The lease will not be renewed.

A screen showing a scene with people who wear masks
With Nicholas Calvin Mwakatobe, an artist is part of both VINYAGO and “Histories of Tanzania”. Also, the documentary film about VINYAGO was shown as part of this weekend’s accompanying program.
Here, a famous scene about Tanzania’s young generation

A photo collage: An older man drawn in front of an information board which reads: “Remembering, reconciling, bearing united responsibility for our future
While thinking about omissions, I’ve been thinking of Mnyaka Sururu Mboro. A key diaspora person in decolonizing TZ-GER colonial legacy. And someone whose voice was to be heard in VINYAGO.

A conversation between a woman in a business suit and a man in white traditional clothes
Big respect to the community representatives who have come to Humboldt Forum - not just any space. And the two panels with them yesterday - wow.
And I feel grateful for each conversation. Here, with Chief Adam Mkwawa.

A drawing. A round circle discussion. In the background there are masks.
While listening to the panels at Humboldt Forum this weekend, I’ve also been reminded of the talks after the VINYAGO performances at Humboldt Forum in 2022.
What is the state of Tanzanian-German colonial legacy?

A drawing. A performance. An audience watching dancers who wear masks. In the background visuals of Humboldt Forum.
These days, with “Histories of Tanzania” now open at Humboldt Forum, I’ve been thinking a lot of when two years back, VINYAGO was there, co-curated by Isack Abeneko, Nicholas Calvin Mwakatobe and Gita Herrmann.

A panel in front of an audience. In the background projected “Histories of Tanzania”.
What a moment. Community representatives from Tanzania speaking at the opening of “Histories of Tanzania” at Humboldt Forum, a very controversial place itself. Even more so, a panel of deeply touching moments. Here, Fatma Adam Sapi Mkwawa was speaking. Photo Credit: @nsamila #pamojart
