Phenology is the observation of the seasonal and cyclic changes in the natural world, and a #phenologywheel or journal is a wonderful way to turn your nature observations into art.

#phenologywheel is an infrequently used hashtag but contains lovely art and nature observations.
Hand painted phenology wheel in which a circular graph is broken into slices for each day of February, with a painting of sunrise that day in each slice, along with temp/sunrise/sunset data for that day.
February was not a productive art month except for this one thing - tiny paintings of the sky each day. Either at sunrise, civil twilight (sun 0-6degrees below horizon) or just a little after sunrise, whatever was more interesting.

#Phenologywheel update for the third week of February 2025.
I have a few plants that need identifying but will know better when they flower.

Circle divided into 32 segments. Each segment is a day of the month. Segments 1 to 9 have small watercolour paintings of plants found in a typical British garden.
February Phenology Wheel update: there’s actually a lot more colour in the garden than you would imagine. Getting more used to working with watercolours too.

Daily watercolour sketches depicting viburnum blossom twig on day 1 and chestnut buds on day 2.
February sketches are underway. I think I’m going to enjoy this month’s #phenologywheel theme.

🔉Sound on!
Here’s a video of January’s #phenologywheel showing the weather each day in my home town in Northamptonshire, UK
Being the first month of the year and many people make New Year’s resolutions, I wrote some inspirational quotes around the outer edge.

Well done everyone, we made to the end of January! Definitely felt like more than 31 days! I’m so happy with my #phenologywheel especially as a novice watercolour painter. Now to think about the theme for February….

Image of a circle divided into 32 segments each representing the weather on each day of the month, painted in watercolours. Last few days mostly just grey! Foreground image overlapping days 12-14 is the top of a clock tower. Day 16 is a misty view of trees.
Here’s a #phenologywheel update.
It’s been a dull week: no wind, no rain, hardly any sunshine. Tried to make it a little more interesting by adding something in the foreground.
Any suggestions for a different theme for February? It’s usually nature-inspired.

Update on the #phenologywheel project. My glitter pen is getting a lot of use, but painting frost is hard - anyone have any tips?

These tiny practice paintings are so quick…and I’m learning all about my local plant life. 🍃 #phenologywheel
Day 6 segment of the phenology wheel depicts cloudy grey sky at first with a hint of sleet then blending into blue sky and finally sunset pink. High temperature of 4°c and low of -1°c.
Enjoying the process & keeping up with the daily record of the weather on my #phenologywheel
British weather is reknowned for being varied, not just day to day but hour to hour, so it will be interesting to see how the month progresses.
#dailysketch #januarty #britishweather
2nd January segment of the phenology wheel has been painted in watercolour to show blue sky and sunshine. Temperature range shows a high of 3°c and low of -4°c in the middle of the UK.
It’s getting cold out there but at least the sun is shining.
Now I need to hunt for my sparkly glimmer pen to prepare for the frost and snow that’s predicted.
What’s the weather like where you are?
