π Rainbow bee-eater (Merops ornatus) The rainbow bee-eater is a strikingly colourful bird, predominantly green with a yellow throat, black eye-stripe, chestnut nape, and a blue rump. Adult males possess elongated central tail feathers. It's widely distributed across Australia, migrating north from southern regions during winter, and also found in eastern Indonesia, New Guinea, and some Pacific islands. These highly social birds are typically seen in small flocks. They hawk insects, especially bees and wasps, on the wing from an exposed perch, and nest colonially in burrows dug into sandy banks or flat ground. Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1) π·: Photo by Kanenori via Pixabay https://pixabay.com/photos/bird-bee-dome-merops-ornatus-2224158/ MJBM

Ever wondered why bee populations are declining? Surely not because of these beautifully coloured creatures. #birds #aussiebirds #photography #aussiewildlife #auswildlife #wildlife #rainbowbeeeater #colourful

Two rainbow bee eaters sitting on the branch of a white cedar tree. The bright green leaves of the cedar are a gentle backdrop to this colourful pair. The bee eaters are facing away from each other. Their head is orange, with their eyes masked by dark feathers, blending with their long curved beak. Under their eye mask it's a thin line of teal coloured feathers. Their chests have a dark band of feathers across the top, and their breasts are light yellow with hints of lime green. Their orange tail feathers taper down with a longer thin feather extending from the centre of their tail feathers. Their call sounds similar to a cricket, in short sharp bursts.
Love these little beauties, the native Australian Rainbow Bee Eater, so many visit us, and we can hear them chirping most days. This pic was taken in our garden of them resting on the branch of one of our many white cedar trees #rainbowbeeeater #birds
Rainbow bee-eater Rainbow bee-eaters are brilliantly coloured birds that grow to be 23β28 cm (9.1β11.0 in) in length, including the elongated tail feathers, and weighing 20β33 g (0.71β1.16 oz). The upper back and wings are green in colour, and the lower back and under-tail coverts are bright blue. The undersides of the wings and primary flight feathers are rufous to copper with green edges and tipped with black, and the tail is black to deep violet. The rainbow bee-eater's two central tail feathers are longer than the other tail feathers. In this image the Rainbow bee-eater is diving at full speed down and slightly to the left between some this branches of a tree.

Got taken out to shoot some birds this morning with no expectation of seeing these wonderful birds.
Had a fantastic morning, I'm shattered now though π₯΄ #mecfs

The spectacular Rainbow Bee-Eater has green, blue, chestnut and yellow plumage, a slim build, slender curved bill and distinctive streamers that extend from the end of its tail. Rainbow Bee-eaters gather in small flocks before returning to summer breeding areas. Both males and females select a suitable nesting site in a sandy bank then dig a long tunnel, leading to a nesting chamber lined with grasses. Both parents incubate the eggs and both feed the young. Their habitat is widespread in Australia, especially the south west, and in New Guinea. Image Credit: Kevin Marshall
