Une thèse très controversée La manière dont Tariq Ramadan obtient sa thèse universitaire, consacrée à Hassan Al-Banna, restera sans doute pour longtemps dans les annales de l’Université de Genève. En effet, il va tenter de présenter son grand-père comme un Gandhi musulman, quitte à manipuler les traductions en arabe. Et à gommer le caractère totalitaire et antisémite de la redoutable Confrérie. «Jundî n’est pas traduit par ‘soldat’ comme il doit l’être, mais par ‘militant’», dénonce l’universitaire lyonnais Mohamed-Chérif Farjani (1). Charles Genequand, spécialiste du monde arabe et directeur de thèse de Tariq Ramadan, se souvient que non seulement l’étudiant refuse d’apporter des corrections, «mais il harcèle les membres du jury pour l’obtenir au plus vite [sa thèse]» (2). Le Genevois ira même jusqu’à menacer Ali Merad, professeur émérite à l’Université de la Sorbonne, autre membre du jury, d’une plainte… Confronté à la démission de ses examinateurs, Tariq Ramadan sort de sa manche la théorie du complot. Selon lui, l’Université de Genève chercherait à discriminer un musulman! Il reçoit aussitôt le soutien du professeur Jean Ziegler et de sa compagne Erica Deuber Pauli. Ces derniers mènent un intense lobbying pour dénicher… un second jury de thèse, un peu plus complaisant que le précédent. Finalement, «Aux sources du renouveau musulman. D’Al-Afghani à Hassan Al-Banna, un siècle de réformisme islamique» réussit tout juste à passer la rampe. Son auteur n’obtient même pas la mention «très honorable». Ce qui signifie en langage universitaire que les portes des facultés en Suisse sont fermées à Tariq Ramadan.
