Today's #BirdOfTheDay prompt is #OddCouples. I love watching #CommonRavens and #RedTailedHawks because they don't fight; they just chase each other. Sometimes one is behind; then they switch positions. They like to fly way up high, then dive towards the ground.

This was quite an awesome scene!
Two #RedtailedHawks, a juvenile (bottom), adult (top), and a #Raven, all fight for air superiority and territory! Eventually the adult bugged out, while the juvenile was left alone.

These two #RedTailedHawks were engaged in a bit of one-up-bird-ship! They would charge towards each other daring one another to dodge (or not).

I'm pretty sure this is the same red-tailed hawk from before. And I'm pretty sure he's still sick of me.😂

Two #redtailedhawks having a mid-air dispute over territory. They mostly flew circles around each other, screeching. Only once did they come at each other!

Did you know that Red-tailed Hawks, like Jake, are known to consume as many as four rodents per day? This adds up to more than 1,000 rodents each year! #RedTailedHawks #PestControl #BirdsofPrey #EcosystemHealth

A very tight crop of the chick who is actively eating a pigeon’s foot by swallowing it whole in a manner that looks most uncomfortable. Don’t worry, after a few gulps and some readjustment, it went down just fine! While hawks typically tear their prey up and eat in smaller chunks, it’s not uncommon to scarf a meal especially when surrounded by hungry siblings. A foot is also probably pretty difficult to tear apart…

The other day I shared a photo of an adult swooping through my shot with a dinner delivery. This was the aftermath! One chick snagged the pigeon and made their way to this tree and the other two chicks followed suit, hoping to snag a few bites. #nature #wildlife #birds #hawks #redtailedhawks

A fun and unexpected little set of photos! I was just trying to take some nice photos of this chick sitting very sweetly on this branch when an adult came flying through with supper!

I just love the way juvenile red-tailed hawks look at the world, including each other! “What the heck are you?” one youngster seems to ponder about their sibling.

This image is a side-by-side comparison of the wings of two Red-tailed Hawks before and after recovery, shown in a four-panel grid.

Top and bottom left (BEFORE):
The hawk’s wings are visibly damaged and incomplete, with many of the flight feathers missing or broken. The feathers appear patchy, uneven, and frayed, leaving large gaps along the wing edges. The hawk is being gently held by gloved hands for examination. The bottom left hawk is wearing a 'hood' over its head.

Top right (AFTER):
The hawk’s wings are shown fully feathered and restored, with strong, smooth, and symmetrical flight feathers. The wings now appear full and healthy, ready for flight. Again, the bird is being held carefully for display.

Bottom right (AFTER):
The hawk's wings show significant feather growth, with only a small section on the wing missing some feathers. The bird is being held carefully, with it's wing out.

The word "BEFORE" is overlaid on the two left panels, and "AFTER" is overlaid on the two right panels in bold white text. The lower right corner also features the Salthaven Wildlife Rehabilitation & Education Centre logo.

Two #RedtailedHawks came to #Salthaven with wing injuries. With help from our vet partners, they healed through therapy and time. #Flightfeathers had to regrow before release. B&A photos of their transformation. Recovery takes teamwork, patience, and understanding what makes flight possible.

The pair of juveniles together still. The upper one is looking off to the side while perched strangely, gripping the tree between two of their forward-facing toes instead of grabbing around the branch like normal. The lower one is in the same position but with both talons perched, while they have their head twisted all the way upside down with their beak open to look at something, and they are extremely silly-looking

All three of the red-tailed hawk chicks have fledged and are doing well! Expect a ton of photos of hawks in the coming weeks/months. Fun fact: it was a chick from this nest in 2020 who was the catalyst for my love of hawks and eventually all birds!
