In today's #throwback, Colleen Hennessy dives into the role of Irish nonfiction in the #RepealThe8th campaign, highlighting how writers like @sineadgleeson & @TaraFlynn broke decades of silence.

It was stories like this that helped educate the Irish public on voting to #repealthe8th in our constitution especially series of posts ok Facebook called #inhershoes and of course Savita Halappanavar RIP #speirghorm
Back during #repealthe8th not only could pro choice activists organise on Twitter, but policy makers, doctors, midwives and ordinary women who had undergone abortions were able to discuss the issue of reproductive healthcare in a (barely) civilised environment. That could never happen now.
This framing is so reminiscent of how they spoke about the Savita case here
#speirghorm #repealthe8th
Are these even legal?
Yeah she doesn't represent me or all those who voted to #repealthe8th or for #marriageequality or anyone who who wants a separation of church and state.
#speirgorm
How is the EU undemocratic its one citizen one vote? We may not like #Russia actions leading to increased defence spending, but we can't stop our fellow EU citizens defending themselves. Every referendum can be rerun see #Repealthe8th (thankfully).
will never forget the time he replied to me in the week of the #repealthe8th referendum (it passed btw) he is one hero i want to meet
[17] This gives us some idea of how little you know about Irish realities, north or south.
We do not need you here. We have not had your support in our fight for #repealthe8th, our fight against the historical and ongoing impact of theโฆ
In Ireland we had #Repealthe8th and #TogetherForYes, famous days.
This day 7 years ago I spent most of the day crying.
Tears of joy, tears of stress release, so many tears,
thankfully I was surrounded by friends, who hugged and held me.
I had predicted we would win the #repealthe8th referendum by at least 60% and I was right :)
Repeal Memories - me and ColinMcGovern of Dublin Bay North Repeal doing the #DubBN tally for @labour and @DBNRepeal - #Savita looking down over us. The Returning Officer for the Dublin referendum counts came over and screamed at us to remove it a few minutes after this pic was taken! Also a photo of Savita Halapanavar. Never again.
#Repealthe8th memories - me and @cmcgovern.bsky.social at the referendum count 5 years ago!!
WE DID! And banners too :)

Group of joyful people from Kilkenny celebrating the result of the referendum to repeal the 8th amendment.
Tally sheet from a box in a rural constituency showing 258 votes for repeal, 123 against.
Tallying the vote. Many yes please tallying. Not many no people tallying. The no people left the hall altogether when they realized what the outcome would be.
What a day that was. God we were exhausted from walking and talking and vitriol. I particularly love that tally of a rural box with 67% yes, 33% no, as it turned out the same as the national result. Despite media being convinced rural voters would never vote yes. #repealthe8th
Some of the people involved in the Tipperary campaign to repeal the 8th Amendment gathered for a group photo outside The Green Sheep Cafรฉ in Thurles on May 25th, 2018. The vibe was one of relief rather than celebration!
Some of the leaders (many missing) of #TippForChoice with our banner at the count centre in Thurles. Maebh Ryan, Debbie Hickey, Caoimhe Hogan, me, Sinead Magner. Legends.
Seven years ago, my god. I'm still not over it.

24 May 2018 - what a journey! Travelling back to Dublin & asking people to #BeMyYes in the referendum to #RepealThe8th
An incredible campaign #AbortionIsHealthcare
The colonialism of British TERFs is through the roof. Again. This open letter from Irish feminists to British transphobes in 2018 remains relevant.
Where was JK Rowling's money for #RepealThe8th? But she has it to spread British Anti-LGBT hate in Ireland? #Spรฉirgorm

The Galway Plaza motorway stop pictured from the footpath outside. To the right a van with 05D39420 is parked on the grass.
A โLove Both protect the 8thโ banner is held by a group of activists with pink umbrellas. To the left is a van with a poster. On the poster is a mother & toddler with the phrase โthe time it took to plan an abortion in England was the time I needed to change my mind.!The 8th Amendment saves lives.โ on it.
A yellow box van sits in Galway traffic. On the back is a poster of a mother & baby with the phrase โThe 8th Amendment saves livesโ. The reg plate says 05D39420.
Came across something today.
Keep this in mind, especially with the Presidential elections coming upโฆ
First pic is today (March 2025), the other two are from the #repealthe8th days.

Remember the tone policing of #marref and #repealthe8th?
There is no acceptable way to protest the right, in their opinion - they are afraid of any and all criticism of their behaviour and ideas.
With both #RepealThe8th and #MarriageReferendum I talked to everyone, family, friends & neighbours putting my point across. 9/10 times all you had to do was ask them how this would/did effect someone they knew and all of a sudden their options changed. People just need to stop 'othering' the issues
Photo of postal envelopes relating to Seanad Eireann election of NUI panel. Includes electoral material from Michael McDowell, Rรณnan Mullen, Sandra Adams, Linda O'Shea Farren
Well look at what the postie just delivered #SeanadEireann
It was #RepealThe8th campaigning that gave me the push to register to vote in 2016 - 29 years after graduating from UCD! Any advice on voting strategy to see Senator Mullen dislodged from NUI panel would be gratefully received.
Well @markhamillofficial.bsky.social one of my fave memories is one of you replying to a tweet of mine. You waited until the morning of #repealthe8th decision to quote tweet your support of women's abortions rights in Ireland . Unfortunately I don't have it as I left that god awful place. But GRMA.
Irish Twitter was really something. So many laughs and such a strong community. #repealthe8th was an especially strong moment that was amazing to watch from afar.
I didnโt know most of this; how the recently-repealed eight amendment of the Irish constitution came to be in 1983 & why

Could any #Repeal #Repealthe8th allies help? I'm hoping to contact people involved in the Irish choir Voices for Choice in 2017 - 18. Contact info I've found may be out of date. Would appreciate any leads. Thanks.
In many ways, the campaign to repeal the Eighth Amendment was a product of its time. In 2012, social media was relatively free from suppressive algorithms. The hashtag #RepealThe8th was first used on Twitter by a now-private account on 25th November 2012. It swiftly went viral.
ah as a person he's not a bad sort at all, he has a good sense of humor. Canvassed along side him for #MarrigeEquality and #Repealthe8th out in #DubW
Aontu are an #antichoice party, voters in #southkildare voted 71% in favor of #repealthe8th & if a party doesn't trust half the population to decide their own future then we should not trust them with any of ours
Don't give them a pref if you want to keep our rights.
