A macro image of a piece of petrified wood which is part of the Royal Ontario Museum's mineral collection. The concentric rings of the original tree are visible in the brown, fossilized remains. Opal deposits have formed in what were presumably cracks in the wood. At the angle the image was made, the opal is primarily blue with some milkier white spots and flashes of green fire.
Petrified wood with opal inclusions. Opal is by far my favourite gemstone; I think the fire is mesmerising.

A tightly framed macro image of a chunk of wulfenite in the Royal Ontario Museum's collection. The rusty orange mineral is comprised of flat, tabular crystal structures arranged somewhat haphazardly. The dense, chaotic sample is reminiscent of a large head of hydrangea blooms drying out.
This is wulfenite, but the clusters of flat crystal tablets remind me of a drying hydrangea.

A macro image of a massive sparkling stone held in the Royal Ontario Museum's collection. The faceted stone is roughly triangular with rounded corners. It is extremely refractive, but far too soft to be used in jewelry. The cerussite is a lead carbonate also called "white lead". It was the key ingredient in lead paint as well as historical cosmetics.
The Light of the Desert.
This is the largest faceted cerussite gem in the world (898 carats). The way it refracts light is extraordinary, however it is actually an extremely soft, fragile #stone which is why a faceted one is rare.

A macro image of a quartz geode. The ovoid rock has had a section cleanly sliced off to reveal the inside. The smooth, polished face has a warm brown ring with progressively lighter rings in side it. The opaque sections quickly give way to pale crystals. In the center is a circular opening about one third of the geode's diameter. The inner crystals are largely in deep shadow with the exception of one tall, pointy shard which is a more opaque, pale pink. Overall, the rock somewhat resembles a crystalline eyeball with a vaguely reptilian fleck in the pupil.
A quartz geode (for now). Plotting to collage it into a dragon's eye or something along those lines. Maybe just a really sparkly frog.

A macro image of a lumpy, bright green chunk of malachite the looks more like a head of broccoli than a rock. The very top has a section that looks like a thin piece curling over like a cabbage. The surface is somewhat dull with a mix of dark sections that look nearly black and a small number of white spots dusted around. It looks it could have a flocked velvety texture in some spots though I expect appearances are deceiving in this case. NIKON D610 105mm f/2.8

A macro image of a sheet of copper found in the Royal Ontario Museum's mineral collection. The sheet was blasted free with dynamite during a mining operation resulting in a curving, bent, sculptural form. The explosion also fused black pieces of shale to the shiny metal. The focus is on the more distant section of the metal which is brightly lit. The overhang of other portions of the sheet cast distinct sections of shadow from deep, nearly completely obscured areas at the top left to a bright dagger of light jutting into the middle from the mid-left edge. An out of focus section of the copper is in the foreground. It has a ragged edge with some small holes. This detail is causing lace-like shadows beneath. NIKON D610 105mm f/2.8

A photograph of a decorative stone carving on the exterior facade of the Royal Ontario Museum. The carving is split into three panels. In the central section, an all capital letter inscription is found between six different examples of decorative scroll work. The text reads "The arts of man through all the years". On either side, the panels are divided between a stacked pair of circles each containing an example of human architecture: A rectangular archway above a Greek or Roman temple on the left, and a triumphal arch above a cathedral on the right.
