I love random tables that don’t feel random.
This one is designed to aim the chaos directly at the characters’ pasts.

I don’t mind mechanics.
But if your game’s best moments are in initiative order, I’m probably homebrewing the soul back into it.

If I want to combine a characters Zodiac sign and professional Background.
Could you call it a Zodiback?
People might be wondering why this is a version .98. There's a couple reasons I'd like to go into... but I'd also like to say as is, it's a playable system! But there's some things I'd like to expand on for the game before saying it's 1.0.

🌟 Hey #TTRPGCommunity, let’s start the week with some fun! 🌟
What’s a hill you’ll always die on when it comes to #TTRPGs? A mechanic you love, a design choice you’ll defend, or even a hot take you just can’t let go of?
Let’s hear them!

🧠 #RPGThoughts for #TTRPGDesign 🧠
Every mechanic tells a story. Dice pools, cards, tokens... each creates a unique rhythm and mood for players. How do you decide what system best fits your game’s narrative?

What idle #RPGThoughts are in your head today? What #TTRPG rules are you thinking about? What random memory are you visiting? What kind of random concepts and ideas are floating around in your in mind?
Rambling, reflective mood this evening. Thinking a lot about the purpose of a #TTRPG engine [world emulation, answer oracle, narrative engine, etc]. How it affect interpretation of rolls. How it shapes the assumptions of a system. How it impacts the design choices. #RPGThoughts
I love only-player-rolls-for-actions systems. Something is always happening on a roll, good or ill. There's no "nothing happens" whiffing on a miss. I also love the sense of conflict/struggle it evokes.
What about you? Where do you fall? What do you like?

One thing KILL THE CANDY KING is making me reflect on is the way I do structured stories in games. To me, it's a board game like approach. There are counters or mission parameters to be accomplished per phase. But I still run firmly sandbox in it.

What's on everyone's mind as the day is winding down?
What's going on in your internal world?
Any interesting or weird #TTRPG thoughts mixed in there?
#TTRPGCommunity #RPGThoughts
Still pondering Toy vs Tool, affecting both design & player side: Toy vs Tool.
While it *roughly* correlates with freeform vs structure, only imperfectly as toys can be strictly designed and tools creatively/freeform used.
There's something there.
#TTRPG #RPGThoughts
Looking back at my 80s games, played [and still play] those RAW. Pendragon, Ars Magica, Ghostbusters. Pretty much as written. But then the [neo]trad 90s & 00s hit and it's just a bunch of games that only work for me by sticking to core & ignoring most of it.
#RPGThoughts #TTRPG
Just saying:
1) Crunch & narrative are not at odds by their nature. See: Burning Wheel.
2) There's a way underserved market for rules heavy games. See, again: Burning Wheel. [More specifically the wave of people playing full RAW more recently.]
#TTRPG #RPGThoughts
Pondering a bit on disparities in ostensibly story oriented #TTRPG games. One that's standing out to me now is games that push a tone vs push a structure. Or related, games that make a sandbox to build stories in vs direct narrative levers. Just chewing some #RPGThoughts.
Have you thought about designing a #TTRPG but never have? Why is that? What stops your #RPGThoughts from becoming RPG reality?
Are you an old hat TRPG indie dev? Watch the responses and offer some advice!
Good morning all! How is everyone doing today?
What kind of #Tabletop / #TTRPG thoughts are in your head today? Any recently played sessions fresh in mind? Any mechanics or theory buzzing around in your head?

Thought Punks 🎲 TTRPGs + Weird 👩🎤 @ThoughtPunks Great example point: Chill, Toon, Paranoia, Star Ace, and Fighting Fantasy were all released in 1984. And distinctly very much not what people often have in mind thinking of retro gaming or that era. 11:14 AM · May 9, 2023 · 53 Views
These games were released FOURTY years [FOUR DECADES] ago. James Bond was 1983 and Ghostbusters was 1986.
"Modern" and "narrative" gaming is WAY older than people think. Hell, it's approaching middle age.
#RPGThoughts #TTRPG #History #GameDesign
I've actually had some #RPGThoughts about something like that [and even tested some rough packets]. Where the "players" are the world and the "GM" is the focus character / protagonist. [scare quotes obvious] Most developed concepts:
Gods + mythic hero.
Factions/advisors + leader.

Now, the real #RPGThoughts here are:
1) Tweaks like this are surprisingly rare. It's EXCEPTIONALLY common in many of the tropes and subgenres TTRPGs seek to approximate. Hell, just superheroes alone. Hero gets beat down by a superior foe, then summons inner strength/clever idea/whatever & hard wins.
