Property map of Shelby c.1859 showing the section of 22 Mile Rd between the Clinton River and The Canal. Construction began on the canal in 1838 but it was quickly abandoned after only making it from Mount Clemens to Rochester (about 17 miles (27.3km)). It was briefly navigable in the early 1840's.
