With Katie

Possibly our 2nd shoot together, it was a number of years ago.

We did quite a few shoots in the end. Great model to work with

For years, I found a sweet spot between Thanksgiving and New Years where I could get out of Portland Oregon and look for somewhere warmer to be. Nobody really DOES anything and the phone doesn't ring and I didn't really have a big desire to string twinkle lights at holiday parties. So it was off into the wilds. This particular trip found me holed up in a remarkably wonderful little motel in La Jolla, CA just steps from the beach. A mutual friend referred me to Amelia, who popped up from her lair in Mexico to work with me.

I can only imagine the eye-roll that models must indulge in when they open a message and see the words "hotel room shoot". I had a dear friend who mimicked holding a phone and adopted a creepy old photographer-guy-voice, "You're gonna love it - I have a totally original idea! I'll get a hotel room and sexy lingerie and you can roll around on the bed and feign an orgasm!" This little bon mot was gifted me early in my so-called career and while I won't say that I've been successful I HAVE made it a point to ATTEMPT to avoid the whole thing. That said, I can think of three or four hotel room shoots that have been what we had available and were absolutely awesome. It ain't where you are, it's what you do with it.

In this case, I had Amelia as a secret weapon. Upbeat and immediately hitting the vibe, we played with steam and mirrors and doors and water and a few simple props. I go back and forth in how I think of the erotic or sensual nature of figurative art. My preference runs toward taking it as a background fact and focusing on intimacy and emotional content. Talking through this with an experienced model the other day it occurred to me that glam/beauty work tends to be very "same" in its perfection. And I admire the ability to hit that sameness with such consistency. I would just find it very very boring.

What I found striking in Amelia was the ability of an experienced model to turn on this brooding intensity. I laughed so much during this that my face hurt at the end but she would snap back into character as soon as I raised the camera and smolder away for the camera. I had never tried to work in a steamy environment and that had some challenges.

It's hard to believe this was six years ago now. I was just making what now looks (in retrospect) like a transition from newly-obsessed to a very good run of work behind the camera. I knew the machines fairly well and they felt like something that belonged in my hand. This was the beginning of really pushing myself to create in every imaginable setting and coming away with the feeling that I could take almost any environment and produce something that would be interesting. the realization that, in fact, you can easily over-think set and setting. Try fewer props. Less of everything. Let the subject BE.

It was also where I hit stride in working with more-experienced models. I had been very fortunate right off the bat to gain a coterie of friends who really informed my thinking and sensibility. Having a model that I might be a bit in awe of showing up meant that I pushed myself harder to have SOMETHING ready that wouldn't be stupid. A hidden benefit that I wouldn't understand for a few more years was that the file of every shoot is a tool that I can return to over and over and have new lessons present themselves. They follow a regular pattern -- the first initial look will yield obvious stuff, the "wow" moments. There's no arguing with those. A few months later I might look through again and get a totally different set of "oh wow, THAT actually" moments. And months later again, a review will show me what the model was thinking and totally realign the shoot in my mind for edits and crops. Amazing. A fantastic gift.

Funny to think I've only worked with Lucy four times...is that all? Quick day this last time around, a camping trip the summer before....a big Covid break...2019, 2018. Yep. But from the very first moment we met I absolutely adored her -- she's the real deal, the full package, some sort of improvement on sliced bread! I feel really fortunate to have met a wonderful group of models who make me want to think outside the box, be a better photographer and generally up my game. There's been maybe close to a dozen who inspire that -- true muses. There are a huge number that I've met and we've done good work and I'd love to see them again but like any relationship the timing just has to be right. Sirena Earthmodel comes to mind as someone I hope makes it back this way some time. Maybe it's more than a dozen because I think of that list and then start adding names.

The funny thing is that I use a lot of that inspiration to feel secure in failing. They're being amazing, which I can see with my eyes, and I'm trying to get the camera to suggest a helix in the curve of their spine or some other fool pursuit and generally not getting it the way I want it. But maybe that's also the function of a muse....to allow that trust to go further and get past things that are done properly. In four tries with Lucy, I think my favorite image is still one from our very first shoot that just showed up looking like a Dutch master had jumped in with three assistants and a bunch of oil paint. But no...that's not true...there are a couple of pieces we made last summer that are absolutely perfect. Again, no fancy edits on these. They just worked.

The neatest thing about Lucy is the way that light spills out of her. Her other interests and passions really come through in her modeling and I'm so appreciative of her determination to build a great shot. I put a lot of effort into set and setting but the truth is that all Lucy needs is a bit of light and allowing herself to show through to the camera.

In part this is what makes it hard to capture a really perfect picture of her. When I look at what we've done I am comparing it to the person I can see in my minds eye and realizing that I'm not yet skilled enough to herd such ephemeral qualities into 1's and 0's. The pictures I take really are built up of every experience and interpreted through the lens of my impressions.

A few years back I was in Key West, strolling the midnight streets in a t-shirt and being amazed that late-December could be so balmy. I came upon a roughly 5' bird cage at a curb and was pondering fitting a 5'10" model into it and how I would get it home when a cab pulled up and a very drunk gal got out and wanted to know what I was doing with her bird cage. She turned out to run a bird sanctuary, specifically parrots, and after sharing a night cap on her porch I found myself back again the next day with my camera in hand to shoot some parrot pictures. There was another photographer there, a very nice woman from Kentucky, and we stood side by side, armed with very similar DSLR's and very similar lenses. Parrots were trotted out and placed on a table and we dutifully took their pictures and tried to make common cause. At one point she and I traded cameras and I was shocked. Her parrots were Disney butlers -- singing and dancing, a glint and twinkle in their eyes. Mine, on the other hand, were wicked pirates with a side-eye and the hint of a dagger in their teeth, plotting revenge and rum and rebellion. That was my first real hint that the photographer is an interpreter, that the story we tell is about us more than anything else.

2019 with Lucy. We had an amazing ramble around her old exchange-student stomping grounds and rented a super-cool barn conversion for some cowboy fun that turned out to be owned by a gal I later re-met while doing sound for her EDM festival. Small world. #singlelight #hardedge #bodyscape #beauty
