In the foreground, a group of people enjoy a warm summer day on the grassy shoreline of the Toronto Islands. Two men wade into the water while others lounge or stand, watching boats glide across the harbour. Dominating the right side of the frame is the Trillium, the city’s iconic sidewheel ferry, painted in bright white with a black smokestack and red flag. This vessel—built in 1910—still exists today, making it one of the oldest operating ferries in North America. Across the water, the Toronto skyline of the 1940s rises modestly but recognizably. Key landmarks include: Bank of Commerce Building (the tallest tower at the time) St. James Cathedral spire Numerous grain elevators and industrial buildings along the central waterfront This vivid postwar view captures the peaceful, everyday life of Torontonians in a city just beginning to grow upward and outward.

A colour photograph of a portion of the skyline of Toronto looking north from Queen's Quay. A sunny day with barely any clouds is depicted. A large grass field takes up much of the foreground and a number of buildings are midway, some far in the distance can be seen. The Royal York Hotel is the highest of the buildings. Union Station, the old Toronto Postal Delivery Building, the old Toronto Star Building on King St. W, and Canada Life Building on University Ave. are visible.
