John Cabot was the anglicized name of Giovanni Caboto, the Italian navigator and explorer who used King Henry’s charter to pull together the money for a ship and crew that would sail to North America. It was not Cabot’s finest hour. An English merchant, corresponding with the explorer Christopher Columbus, summarized Cabot’s trip by writing “he went with one ship, his crew confused him, he was short of supplies, ran into bad weather, and he decided to turn back.”
Cabot’s 2nd trip to America was more productive. He landed at what are now the Canadian islands of Newfoundland and Cape Breton. During this voyage, Cabot set foot only once on the new world and, as an expedition member wrote, Cabot would go no farther from his ship than the shooting distance of a crossbow. Still, England’s King Henry VII used Cabot’s voyage to claim ownership of North America. More than 500 hundred years later, the ruling British monarch remains Canada’s head of state.
