Very glad about this new paper by former Cardiff Uni @one-cardiffuni.bsky.social PhD student Annalea Beard @annaleabeard.bsky.social come out in #MovementEcology. Documenting very different foraging behaviours and ranges in cool versus hot season breeding populations #stormpetrels from #StHelena.
Please check out this interesting presentation on #stormpetrels and #lightpollution in the Faroes by collaborator and PhD student @bardseyben.bsky.social

Young European storm petrel in the hand
Older European storm petrel chick in the hand
Young European storm petrel chick in a silicone muffin tin, weighing exactly 7g.
An older European storm petrel chick in the same silicone muffin tin (mostly obscured) weighing 38.50g.
One of the challenges of working with European #stormpetrels on the #FaroeIslands is that they don't really synchronise anything... These two chicks were weighed 5 minutes apart! @jasonwalczak.bsky.social @trevormaclaurin.bsky.social

Three nights and three Leach’s Petrels! We’ve also caught 118 Storm Petrels, a great start to the Stormy sessions

EDEC SA works for #CaboVerde govern and changed Brava street & port lights from yellow to strong white LED. A few days later >150 Cape Verde, Leach and WF #StormPetrels & Boyd's #shearwaters collisioned and died. Despite #ProjectoVito warned DNA, 3d later lights are on m.facebook.com/story.php?st...
📢 Exciting postdoctoral opportunity to explore GLS data and SDM on SIX species of STORM PETRELS in the Mediterranean and Atlantic
📢 Exciting new call for a postdoctoral position at @ub.edu to deep into the spatial ecology of #stormpetrels: SDM will focus on up to 6 taxa in the Mediterraean and Atlantic. See details euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/324837
A few months ago, @jasonwalczak.bsky.social and I received a Research Grant from @theseabirdgroup.bsky.social to develop two automatic nest box monitor prototypes for the #stormpetrels on #Nólsoy, #FaroeIslands, together with @robthomasbirds.bsky.social! Parts are in, and work has begun! #arduino
Think #stormpetrels just wing it to find a meal? 🍽️ Think again! Finally, our study is out: these tiny #seabirds use ocean dynamics to find #foraging grounds in the #WestMed. And guess what? Well-placed #MPAs help keep their ‘favorite restaurants’ open.🧑🍳 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Currently, I'm busy (re)writing a paper on #RedKnots, several on #Whimbrel, one on #Puffins, #StormPetrels (hi @trevormaclaurin.bsky.social and @bardseyben.bsky.social), and will start a #postdoc at #Dalhousie soon. I'm also involved in #SEAGHOSTS, a #Biodiversa+ project on Storm Petrels.
I also co-authored a paper led by @ingridpollet.bsky.social, and included a lot of others, about threats to Leach's #StormPetrels across their range, as the leading expert on Leach's Storm Petrels in the #Faroes (ahem, I worked with them for two weeks in 2018 and 2019): doi.org/10.5751/ACE-...
After my #PhD, I was not done with the #StormPetrels, and published maybe my most important paper so far: doi.org/10.1007/s003... Combining Wilson's Storm Petrel data spanning 40 years, we showed that they declined by 90% (!), which is also reflected in #eBird data, most likely due to #climatechange
The third paper I published during my PhD included all 4 (Black-bellied, Wilson's, European, and Leach's) #StormPetrels, and we used stable isotopes to predict where they would moult/migrate to, and whether body size or condition might affect that (or be affected by it): doi.org/10.1371/jour...
My second PhD paper showed significant stable isotope niche overlap in #Antarctica between Black-bellied and Wilson's #StormPetrels likely because of the abdundant #krill, and that Black-bellied chicks are fed a different diet than their parents, but Wilson's chicks are not. doi.org/10.1016/j.sc...
The first paper on #StormPetrels I co-authored, describes how nest characteristics affects micro-climate of the nest, and ultimately breeding success in #Antarctica. It can be found in @plos.bsky.social: doi.org/10.1371/jour...
During my #PhD at the University of #Gdansk, I started working on #StormPetrels in #Antarctica and later the #FaroeIslands. I wanted to know how the niches of sympatrically (that is, in the same place and at the same time) breeding species overlapped (or didn't!). #bird #seabird
Since many more people have come to #Bluesky lately, I though it might be fun to share my publications on here, as well! (And as I'm still ECR, it's a reasonable number). Most are on #StormPetrels, but I do have some cool ones on #Whimbrel as well, and even a co-authorship on #PiedFlycatcher. #bird
Amazing to receive updates from Jens-kjeld on our Storm-petrels in their nestboxes on Nólsoy (Faroe Islands). Amidst the snow and blizzards, the parents keep visiting to feed these fluff balls, and we now only have two chicks left to fledge! I really hope they make it...
