A photo of the cicada's face from the front as it hangs on its brown exuviae. It's large eyes are dark and glossy, it's mint green face is covered in tiny golden hairs, there are three red oceli, primitive eyes, in the center of its head. Its legs are the same mint green as its wings. Its wings are out of focus behind it. It looks quite adorable.

LOOK AT THIS ADORABLE #BABY. Interestingly when a cicada emerges, it looks different for a few hours as its new form hardens a process known as #sclerotization. This different form is known as its #teneral form.

Newly emerged (teneral) Canada Darner on birch tree by the brook where its nymph probably came from.

A teneral (just emerged) Canada darner (Aeshna canadensis). 6’ (~3m) up on birch by fast flowing brook. Nymph probably from brook but couldn’t find excuviae. Common S. Canada/N. US. July 2024 NE US.
