At noho marae learning #TeReoMaori in 2026.
We prepared a skit to perform about a trip to the beach. The punchline is:
‘He tiko i roto i te moana!’
‘No whea ēnei tiko?’
‘No te waha o David Seymour’
(There’s poo in the water!
Where did the poo come from?
From the mouth of David Seymour’)

My hubby’s found which I’m 99% sure is tawaka, growing on a willow root by Waiwhetu river. It is a large brown mushroom that is darker brown in the middle, tan toward the outside, and dark and wrinkly around the edges. The willow root is surrounded by grass.
A few days ago I was saying I wanted to find out what the name of tawaka mushroom means.
I did. It’s because it grows on the tawa tree. Of course.

Passed Te Reo level 4, and passed the entrance exam for level 5!
#TeReoMaori
Edited to correct myself.
Tawaka = mushroom
Tākawa = the berry of the kawakawa plant
(Both tasty)
I want to find the kōrero of where the name of the mushroom, but for now I’m thinking of it as the waka mushroom.
Tā-kawa means from/by kawa, the fruit of kawakawa.
#TeReoMaori
Definition of the reo Māori word, hika. It has three meanings: 1. An exclamation meaning heavens, whoa! Or similar. 2. A mate or friend, with no particular gender attached 3. The pudendum.
Aha, ok. I'm gonna have to take care when using this particular kupu....

Matapēhi day one:
Learnt(ing) new words for "valiant warrior," "revolt," "fight with losses on both sides," "attendant," "long wooden trumpet," and "fog," and a couple others.
The kupu, respectively: mumu, whana, haupārua, hāwini, pūkāea, kohu.
This is shaping up to be a great book.

I've recently been watching Te Kauwaka (Avatar the Last Airbender in te reo Māori).
Comprehension: 8/10. I understand most of it, but there are a few times where I don't know a word or two, or a sentence's grammar structure is a bit new for me.
Focus: 7/10. Sometimes my mind can drift, but I'm […]

Turns out it is available on ETV (thank you to whoever pointed me that way, apologies, I can't find that Toot now?!).
And my wānanga (Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi) provide access to that amazing resource free of charge.
They also have The Haka Party Incident, and Ka Whawhai Tonu as well […]
Another two months, another 50 hours, another learning te reo blog post!
I'm still amazed that I can watch tv or read the news in a different language, understand most of it, and learn from it. Combine that with vocab and grammar study and it's going well! […]
"He rite tonu to korero i te kupu rã. Ki taku mohio he rereke te tikanga i tau e pohehe nã." "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." INIGO MONTOYA (along with a picture of a smiling man with dark hair and a moustache.
“Kāti, kia tutuki, tāu i manako ai.” “As you wish.” WESTLEY. A blonde man with a moustache smiles at the camera.

Once again, for those that haven’t seen it, if you regularly type in what I call “Mākeha” or English and #Māori mixed together, go into your iPhone Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement, and you can add shortcuts to add the macrons in common words you type like so: (see picture)

Kua tunu au i tāku parakuihi mō āpōpō. Not 100% sure on accuracy but wanted to say I've cooked my breakfast for tomorrow. The thing I'm not 100% on is the "mō." I know it as a future possessive but not sure if it can be used that way. Also not sure if I should use this hashing or not? #tereomaori
