"--she flipped up her skirt and he took a good look, and he said, I'll fill all those crannies and nooks --"

"Murder?" Mercy says, following along intently.

"That part's about sex, too," Sprocket explains archly.

"Murder."

"And that part. Pretty much all the parts, really. Can you say 'sex'?"

"Sss-ex," Mercy tries. Sprocket giggles.

Do I need to worry about Mercy's education? Am I, like, in a parental role here? Like she's my terrifying murder-daughter or something? Troubling.

When I learned that we were headed into a swamp, I'd pictured something out of an old storybook -- great trees with hanging curtains of moss, watery bits with crocodiles and dinosaurs. Maybe a hippopotamus or two, gory to the ears with the blood of their latest prey. A cloud drifting through the treetops, soft and rubbery, deluging unsuspecting victims with its deadly rain.

Fiction, obviously. In our enlightened modern age we know that clouds are scientifically impossible (water being heavier than air) and that trees reach heights of only five or six feet rather than towering overhead. Igz'auf Rakan once told me the jury was still out on whether hippos were real, and I've refused to learn more; I liked hippo stories when I was a kid, and it's fun to believe that great gray hyperpredators once roamed the world.

"You came on the supply ship? Where are the others?"

"The ship was attacked by raiders. Only one of the guards and I made it."

"Raiders!" She throws up her hands. "That is a little bit completely inconvenient, I suppose! You didn't happen to see a class three visco-engine while you were escaping, possibly?"

"I … don't think I'd know what that looks like, I'm sorry. But the raiders took all the cargo."

"It was a special order, actually. All the way from the City, and it gets stolen by raiders who won't even appreciate it!" She harrumphs, not angry but frustrated, as though this is one more thing in a long list of indignities to be borne. "The auto-laundry won't last the month and then we'll see who's blamed. A little bit absolutely intolerable!"

"We could clean the belts again, mistress," the girl pipes up. "And look for snags."

"Don't interrupt me when I'm wallowing in self-pity, I suppose," Racnaea snaps.

"Apologies, mistress."
