Left: fragment of the lower half of a tile. Right: a copper plate print depicting the full design, a women sat smelling flowers.
For #TilesOnTuesday here's a 16th-century-AD tile fragment from a stove in Lüneburg, Germany.
Its full design was identified thanks to a contemporary copper plate print. It depicts the personification of smell, a common subject of the time.

Photograph of sandy-coloured tiles arranged in a four-fold rotationally symmetric pattern, devoid of mirror or glide symmetry. The repeating motif comprises an eight-pointed star, surrounded by four identical irregular polygons. The finish is matt, and the colouration variable. The eye is mostly drawn to the black lines between the tiles, rather than to the tiles themselves.
