Through the Cracks is my utopian hard sci-fi story about decentralised fully-automated luxury communist space stations. 🛰️🟥⬛

Cover mockup of Through the Cracks. The title is written at the top, and the author, @miwwdu-sitsom.bsky.social, is written at the bottom, but I would replace this with my name in the final version.

Station 14, an ERSSHO (Enormous Rotational Space Station in Heliocentric Orbit), and one of 126 making up the ALCEFS. In the background, the constellations of Orion and Taurus can be seen, as well as Venus, Earth and the Sun.

The cylindrical space station has one of its flat faces pointed at the Sun, which if shown, would be covered in solar panels. The opposite face, which is visible, has the space dock at its centre, surrounded by red text that reads 'ALCEFS' and 'Station 14', along with the anarcho-communist flag and the flag of the ALCEFS. A spaceship is currently taking off from the space dock, with a pair of glowing red heat radiators on either side. Around the rim of this face is the lookout area, a large window where residents can look out at the stars. There are more windows scattered around the curved face of the station, which would be transparent panels in the floor, again for residents to look out at the stars. Surrounding the station is the flywheel: two rings, one surrounding each circular face of the station, connected by beams (probably around five, although only two are shown). The flywheel rotates opposite the station to stabilise it.

The station is around 50 km in radius, although the image is not to scale, and some aspects like the size of windows or the size of the spaceship relative to the station may not match this.

Made in Krita.

Life in the decentralised, fully automated, jobless space stations of the ALCEFS is idyllic. There are no barriers to housing, food or any other essentials; everyone just receives what they need for free, without having to prove they deserve it. And so Skylar is surprised when they meet a homeless woman. A woman who gave up her home in a coercive deal with a self-styled businessman. But that is not all; Skylar will soon uncover a threat from another angle: a delegate using every trick in the book to promote themself and accumulate proxy votes. As it turns out, even in the idyllic ALCEFS, a couple independent bad actors can still slip through the cracks.

“Hi Nelly. You like it out here in the gardens? Or just couldn’t get a place in the camping grounds?”
“The gardens are nice,” Nelly replied. “But yeah, the camping grounds were booked solid until tomorrow.”
“The camping trip really couldn’t wait, could it?”
Skylar meant it lightheartedly, but could see by Nelly’s reaction that they’d hit a nerve.
“No, it couldn’t, but –” Nelly started, frustrated. “It’s not a camping trip, okay? I just need somewhere to sleep.”
“You got kicked out of home?” Skylar asked. “Why not stay at the temporary shelter?”
After all, it’s there for people who need a place to stay while they apply for a new home.
“That’s where I was staying for the past two months,” Nelly replied. “That is, until I got into an argument with someone there and, well, we agreed to put some distance between us.”
“Two months?!” Skylar repeated, shocked. “It doesn’t take that long to get a home approved.”
A couple days, at most. Usually they have it done the same day.
“For a supplementary home loan?” Nellie remarked. “Apparently it does.”
“Supplementary?” Skylar asked. “What about primary?”
If you were entirely without a home, Skylar couldn’t imagine any reason you’d apply for a loan instead of permanent housing.
“Oh, I didn’t apply,” Nelly admitted.
“Why not?” Skylar pursued.
“If I did, I wouldn’t be able to get…” Nelly started. “It was part of the deal, okay?”
“A deal? You mean someone bribed you to leave your home?”
“No, it’s not like – Okay, it is that. But –” Nelly took a deep breath. “You know Kye Peterson?”

Through the Cracks is a hard utopian sci-fi WIP, I guess Adult. I'm not usually very explicit as a writer, but I won't guarantee any sort of censoring in any of my stories.

I'm just pretending I have something to pitch here. It's a WIP with no title yet and only one chapter (<4000 words) written so far, and I could easily end up scrapping what I have and starting from scratch. I have no timeline for completion and won't be rushed.

I put #A, but I haven't really figured out a target audience, yet. But Skylar is 37, and I won't promise any sort of censoring in any of my stories, although in practice, I rarely have anything very spicy or the like.

My sci-fi story, aka Skylar's story
Some possible titles: 'The ALCEFS', 'Through the Cracks', 'Deals and Campaigns'
•	hard utopian sci-fi
•	if Star Trek were hard sci-fi
•	LGBTQ+, polyamory and disability rep
•	anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian, anti-ableist message

Setting: The ALCEFS (Association of Libertarian Communist Employment-Free Stations)
•	Solar System-based space stations
•	anarcho-communist
•	values sustainability
•	fully-automated and jobless
•	focus on human creations
•	liquid democracy
•	PostEk: sci-fi religion valuing altruism
•	near-utopia with a tumultuous history

MC: Skylar
•	37 yo special ed teacher
•	nonbinary
•	aroace
•	has vitiligo
•	PostEk

Antagonists: Kye Peterson and Erron Colborne
•	villains at odds
•	individual bad actors who fell through the cracks
•	both ableist in opposing ways
•	methods: exploitive deals and propaganda campaigns, respectively
•	Colborne is PostEk with views conflicting Skylar's

#Hopepit: In the space stations of the ALCEFS, everything is automated and everyone gets what they need for free, without needing to work. No one is above another, and all have equal say. There are certainly no homeless people. There shouldn't be.

#Hopepit: I'm an autistic aroace anarcho-communist amateur SFF writer. I hope my sustainable fully-automated luxury communist near-utopia fits here? It has definite #hopepunk and #solarpunk elements, but I can see people being wary of the "fully-automated luxury" bit.

Unentitled sci-fi story (1 chapter in): humanity has escaped Earth and now lives on idyllic space stations orbiting the sun (fully automated luxury communism in SPACE!), but some seek to undermine democracy and egalitarianism through control and extortion

I’m looking for some real #UtopianFiction to read. Something where society has overcome its hurdles. I want to see how those authors tackle our big issues. Any recommendations, #Booksky?
