Oil painting of Swordfish NE874 'B' returning to an escort carrier after a sorties. The Swordfish biplane with Atlantic paint scheme is in the foreground, approaching HMS Fencer to the left of the painting making her way through an active sea. Waves are high showing white crests, and it is clear that the landing will be challenging. Some merchant vessels of the convoy are in the back. Broken clouds are low and scudding over the sea. Swordfish II NE874 returns to HMS Fencer while supporting convoy RA59, in this superb painting by Terence Lee, which hangs in the wardroom of HMS President. During the sortie - the end of which is depicted here - NE874 attacked two surfaced U-Boats, and it was intially unclear if any damage had been done. However, post-war German records revealed that U-674 was in fact sunk in this attack Posted by Daniel J Wheatcroft on Facebook.

From "My Middle East Campaigns" by Brian Robb 1944. This is a caricature in the little known units of the western desert series by Bryan Robb. This one is titled. “ a chaos and confusion officer at work in the field.” it shows an officer at a completely untidy Desk whipping around his legs grinning into the phone and clearly being somewhat off his face. A confused orderly is standing behind him, while a dog Chus on papers under the desk. No doubt this is supposed to be funny, although I suppose it didn’t appear to those who suffered at the hands of confused and incompetent officers during the campaign.

Text from Wikipedia. Having joined up, Brill became a Private in the British Army, 5th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment. He fought in Europe and having survived Dunkirk and returned to England, his regiment was posted to the Middle East. This would have involved him joining a troop ship likely in Liverpool and sailing around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa up the east coast of Africa and through the Suez Canal to Cairo. After a time, Brill was transferred to the RASC, his mother "imagined that life would be somewhat slacker in the RASC than the infantry". Brill's passion for drawing does not appear to have been reduced by the war around him. In fact it became a source for his art as related to his mother by his chum; "...when their convoy was bombed, as it frequently was, John would deliberately go out with his sketch book & pencil and sketch everything in sight, especially the faces of the lads as they ran for cover." He painted all the walls of his colleagues' canteen, with murals which according to his mother, "represented 'A Soldier's leave in Cairo'. This - I understand, afforded them much interest & amusement." These caught the attention of the officers of the RASC who asked him to create some murals in their Officers Mess. The subject of the murals being "The Pleasures of Avarice" and "The Pleasures of Art", he started a third mural of "The Last Supper", "but this was never finished as his company was moved up the line." The mural appears to represent a combination of these subjects. He signed the mural on 21 April 1942,a matter of weeks before his death.

War Artists - day 6

War Artists - day 5
Official war artists are appointed, but there are many other types of war artists. These can include combatants who are artists and choose to record their experiences, non-combatant witnesses of war, and prisoners of war.

War Artists - day 4
Artists record military activities in ways that cameras and the written word cannot. Their art collects and distils the experiences of the men and women who endured it. The artists affect how subsequent generations view military conflicts.

A S.84 torpedo bomber flying past a light cruiser it just attacked. The vessel carries the Royal Navy’s white ensign but is clearly a Montecuccoli or Savoia group light cruiser of the Italian navy. The drawing is dramatic and was done for propaganda purposes.
Today’s favourite #warart comes from Italy where propaganda postcard artists clearly didn’t have access to pictures of Royal Navy vessels.
War Artists - day 3

On 11 April C Squadron moved south with the regiment to an area near Nienburg. It was here that they carried out vital maintenance and had opportunity to rest. 'We were really tired from the fighting,' says Willy, 'and our fairly rapid advance through Germany. It is not really ever possible to relax when you are advancing towards enemy positions. One is always vulnerable? The men remained in the area another day, receiving their first bath for weeks, with an opportunity to go to the cinema in the afternoon. Now they were preparing for the crossing of the River Weser. At 9.30 a.m. on 13 April, the 8th Hussars began their crossing of the Weser at Nienburg and proceeded to an area north, ready to form a bridgehead over the River Aller at Rethem. Having crossed the Weser, they spent time in maintenance and rest. Crossing the Aller was delayed because 53 Division had difficulty establishing a bridgehead over the river. During 14 April, the Royal Engineers constructed a class 40 floating Bailey bridge over the Aller to enable troops to cross the next day. As it happened, Willy and his squadron rolled their tanks over a bridge further south, heading for Duishorn. Routes were heavily blocked and they were unable to get through. They themselves suffered no attack from German forces, but other squadrons of the 8th Hussars were not so lucky. They encountered enemy opposition immediately after crossing the Aller.
