At that moment, January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation would legally take effect. Symbolism in the Work: * The Watch: An elderly man at the center holds a pocket watch, counting down the final minutes of slavery. The Chain: The title of the painting is inscribed at the bottom on links of a broken chain, symbolizing the end of bondage. The Documents: On the right, a copy of the Proclamation is tacked to the wall, illuminated by a torch.
