Humpback whale sexual selection shifts as populations recover from whaling Humpback whale sexual selection is undergoing a profound transformation as populations recover from decades of commercial whaling, according to a new study published in Current Biology. Using an innovative epigenetic molecular clock applied to skin samples, researchers tracked the ages and reproductive success of 485 individual male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) representing about 24 % of the local male population over 19 years (2000–2018) on the New Caledonia breeding ground in the South Pacific.

New study finds humpback whale mating is shifting as populations recover from whaling. Older males now dominate singing, escorting, and paternity.

Snakes keep evolving into cannibals — here's what scientists think is going on A review of over 500 reports of cannibalistic behavior in snakes finds it's appeared multiple times in different evolutionary lineages, leading researchers to hypothesize it's beneficial for snakes…

Snakes eating snakes 🐍

Scientists suggest cannibalism may be an evolutionary response to competition and limited resources. Survival can drive some wild adaptations.
