My normal-sized answer is "No, the card doesn't have to be exiled for paradigm to work. If the Oathbreaker rules carry it to the command zone, that's fine." #WotCstaff
If soulbond came back in #MTGStrixhaven (spoilers: it's not), I'd have to resist all kinds of prepaired and pairadigm bits in the mechanics article, so dodged that one. #WotCstaff
I become prepared," but the creature is already prepared, that ability won't do anything. If the creature is unprepared, that ability will cause it to become prepared and a copy of whatever prepare spell it now has will appear in exile. #WotCstaff
I’m most looking forward to meeting @seananmcguire.bsky.social. In a strong-yet-distant second place is learn to play. Couldn’t hurt. #MCVegas #WotCstaff
Sometimes these things vary by their environments, so what's appropriate for an FDN rare may not be for some other context. It can draw a bunch of cards for a relatively low cost though. #WotCstaff
Dig through the ditches and check out my liches and playtest the first of my drag-UAs #wotcstaff
Speaking truth as always, Jay.
The older novels are a good read…
once you’ve got some newer frame of reference to fill out your lore brain space. You work that older stuff in; Walk before you’re running a 5K keyword-a-thon. #WOTCStaff
I might be a little biased because my wife @stephmhc.bsky.social was the artist on this one. But I love this lil cutie.
But also watching her look up lamprey mouths for reference images was somewhat horrifying.

Note that more modern templates account for this, as seen on cards like Ghost-Spider and Pia Nalaar, Consul of Revival. If the trigger cares about casting a spell from exile, it will notice when you cast the prepare spell. It's just not a card out there. #WotCstaff
One point the mechanics article glossed over: A resolving spell with paradigm is always exiled. This matters for the second and subsequent card with any given name. Even though that spell isn't setting up any new copies, the card is still exiled. The reminder text is clear, hopefully. #WotCstaff
Today's #mtgtrivia question:
What is the only card in Betrayers of Kamigawa to use divinity counters?
#WotCStaff
Answer to yesterday's #mtgtrivia question:
White - Fox
Blue - Moonfolk
Black - Rat
Red - Goblin
Green - Snake

Which famous (infamous?) spell are you most excited to cast? 👀 #WOTCStaff
Class is in session and the #MTGStrixhaven commander precons are starting to be revealed! 🥳 #WOTCStaff
🧵 Will post links to articles below:
Silverquill (or Anhelo), you immediately cause the spell to not have casualty, thus it won't have the second part of casualty at the point it needs to in order to trigger. #WotCstaff
Fun facts, a cute bear preview image & totally nothing to find here but info on #MTGStrixhaven ✌🏽✨

Yes, yes, and neither a prepare spell nor being prepared is an ability, so neither is lost if all abilities are lost. The release notes will have more details, so watch for those. #WotCstaff
The color of a prepare spell counts as part of a card’s color identity. #WotCstaff

No, it still has that static ability that changes how it enters, whether it's prepared or not. It would have to lose its abilities for Ruxa to notice. Note that being prepared itself isn't an ability. If it is prepared and loses its abilities, it will still be prepared. #WotCstaff
Ruxa doesn't see much on the right side of the text box, but she can't help but notice the left side. That is, none of the prepare spell's characteristics are abilities that the creature has, but it still has "This creature enters prepared" and anything else on the left. #WotCstaff
Nothing stopping you. It just won't do anything. #WotCstaff
Amazing people talking about an amazing new novel?
What a novel way to pass the time!
#WOTCStaff
The player who controls the prepared creature is the one who can cast the spell. That is if the creature changes controllers, the player who can cast the spell also changes. #WotCstaff
with a gap in the middle, and rules put in to allow the copy to exist in exile so it can wait long enough for you to cast it (or until it cease to exist because the creature left the battlefield or became unprepared). #WotCstaff
You assume correctly. The card itself is never castable for those alternative characteristics. #WotCstaff
To answer a popular prepare question: While the copy is hanging out in exile waiting to be cast, it’s not a card. It can’t be targeted by Pull from Eternity or “processed” by something like Ruin Processor. #MTGStrixhaven #WotCstaff
In one sense, no. Copies of cards that are then cast have been a thing for a while via cards like Mizzix's Mastery. It is the first time there's been an appreciable delay between the two actions and the copy has just been allowed to exist in exile for while. That part is quite new. #WotCstaff
Confirming it's exile. (Sometimes summoning the article's author works, too.) #WotCstaff
