Great Reed Warbler, Spurn 18/4/26
My morning walk along the gas terminal rocks in Easington was interrupted by a shout from Spurn when this Great Reed Warbler was trapped. Very welcome as I’ve been abroad when the last couple turned up, so thanks once again to the ringers #spurnbirds

After two years working on Wild Galloway (a solo project) it has been a real pleasure to join forces with Karen for our new book (coming soon). Her magical prints capture the varied landscapes of Galloway so perfectly. Writing about the wildlife these places support has been a year very well spent.
Our final spring Thursday evening talk next week at Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory is part 2 of our fantastic winter birding trip to Japan

Lovely morning for a bike ride along the Spurn peninsula. My first trip of the year and a chance to see the storm damage at the north end. Bit quiet for birds, but glorious weather #Spurn
Top work Mr T! 👍
Tundra Bean Goose (with an interesting bill pattern)
Tundra Bean Goose - Eden Springs, Fife
Side-by side Tundra Bean Geese (imho)
Russian Whitefronts (3 of 4 present today)
I returned to Eden Springs in N/E Fife for some quality goose watching. I managed to see the two Bean Geese, that i thought were a Tundra & a Taiga but when i saw them i wasn't convinced wrt to the Taiga & believe it's Tundra with a taiga-like bill?

Pink-footed Geese (one with orange legs) and Barnacle Geese, Caerlaverock 4/3/26.
Russian White-fronted Geese, Caerlaverock 4/3/26
WWT Caerlaverock closed, so walked a loop along the entrance road and around the NNR. Not many geese, but did find 3 Russian Whitefronts and an orange legged Pink-foot. Can’t remember seeing Russian ‘fronts in D&G before, so good to pick some up here in this winter’s influx #phonescoped
Sound up! Evening flight of Barnacle Geese, Nith Estuary (Solway). Barely visible against the hillside #geese #Solway
Record Ribble Russian ‘front count Stuart? I know Fylde has had some huge flocks.

A pity more UK Birders haven’t moved over to Bluesky, because on the rare occasion I do peruse X it only serves to realise how much more UK birding related stuff I’m missing out on. That said, no intention to return… I just wish Bluesky would fix the long standing issue with the Lancs Birding feed!
Fully expected this to be a @stuartsbirding.bsky.social post when I saw that familiar salt marsh photo with Lytham houses in background 😀. Nice one Tom (again).
Quite an uneventful WeBS at #Spurn for me; 20 Whoopers on the Straight of note. Still 8 Russian ‘fronts and a Barnacle around, but 2 Ravens u-turning at the Warren undoubtedly the highlight #phonescoped
L to R: Barnacle with some Cackling genes (note the white collar and mahogany tinged breast), Atlantic Canada, hybrid Barnacle x Cackling Geese
Hybrid Barnacle x Cackling Geese
Atlantic Canadas, hybrid Barnacle x Cackling Geese, Moorhen
Canada, Barnacle and Cackling Goose genes in various bodies
I've had misgivings for a while, but @mattdenial.bsky.social's videos prove that the Branston brantas are a real pickle. Six show mixed features (white foreheads and/or dark breasts) and even the "Barnacle" shows a white collar and mahogany-tinged breast. All F1 & F2 hybrids to my eye #lincsbirding
The Dutch Spectacled Eider is to be released back into the Wadden Sea after it was taken into care at the end of 2025:
Britain’s first Western Olivaceous Warbler Iduna opaca was discovered on Whalsay, Shetland, on 20th October 2023. It remained on 21st October, when it was trapped and ringed.
This presumed Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca 白眼潜鸭 Bái yǎn qián yā) x Baer's Pochard (Aythya baeri 青头潜鸭 Qīng tóu qián yā) hybrid was on the Wenyu River during our monthly biodiversity survey with Beijing Forestry University. #hybrids #beijing #birds
Another amazing Goose day here in the Fylde Bird Club area, finally saw a Tundra Bean goose, this one at Cockersand and the amazing Russian White-front influx continues, saw over 800 today including a single flock of 670 ! #LancsBirding #ukbirding
