Measurement of quadriceps strength using a handheld dynamometer. Patients were seated with the knee at 90° flexion. Quadriceps strength was measured isometrically with a handheld dynamometer (μTas F-1, Anima Corporation, Japan) secured to the distal lower leg using a strap with belt stabilization.
Achieving quadriceps strength within the distribution of older adults without knee OA following TKA is associated with clinically meaningful differences in satisfaction and functional activities.

Abstract text for article titled 'Primary total knee arthroplasty for primary and secondary osteonecrosis'. The Bone & Joint Journal.
TKA is a durable and reliable option for primary osteonecrosis at long-term follow-up, although TKAs performed for secondary osteonecrosis carry a higher reoperation risk.

Cover of BJJ Paper of the Month featuring a study on managing displaced supracondylar humerus fractures with lateral versus crossed Kirschner wires. The Bone & Joint Journal.
Last month's most downloaded #BJJ paper sought to evaluate whether loss of reduction in lateral Kirschner (K)-wiring is noninferior to crossed K-wiring in closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of Type III supracondylar humerus fractures.

Abstract text for article titled 'The association between type of bone cement and revision surgery after primary elective total hip arthroplasty'. The Bone & Joint Journal.
While most contemporary cement types have comparable revision rates, five were associated with a significantly higher rate of revision. Outcome monitoring for bone cement warrants scrutiny just like implant components.

Example of open reduction and internal fixation combined with primary subtalar arthrodesis in a 76-year-old male. Lateral radiographs a) preoperatively, b) immediately postoperatively, and c) six months postoperatively. The patient fulfilled the following of Schepers’ criteria: Böhler angle < 0°, age > 65 years, and with comorbidities.
ORIF combined with subtalar arthrodesis provided good rates of subtalar union and good functional outcomes, with results similar or better than those following ORIF alone or delayed arthrodesis.

BJJ Paper of the Month exploring the link between surgery timing and outcomes after hip fracture. The Bone & Joint Journal. Mazarello Paes et al. Bone Joint J. 2026;108-B(1):30-38.
In last month's most downloaded #BJJ paper, the authors report that surgery within 24 to 48 hours after hip fracture in older people is associated with better clinical outcomes and improved patient-reported outcomes.

Abstract text for article titled 'Survival of the Exeter V40 hemiarthroplasty femoral component and associated complications'. The Bone & Joint Journal.
PTS designs are widely used in cemented hip hemiarthroplasty for displaced intracapsular native hip fractures, though concerns persist regarding the association with higher postoperative periprosthetic femoral fracture risk.

Measurement of glenoid bone loss and glenoid bone fragment on preoperative 3D-CT. a) Yellow line: diameter of the best-fitting circle outlining the inferior glenoid contour; b) blue line: width of the glenoid defect; c) white line: width of the bone fragment. GBL% was calculated as (b/a) × 100; GBF% as (c/a) × 100.
Patients without recurrence were generally older, had shorter delay from the initial instability event, fewer preoperative instability events, and larger glenoid bone fragment for incorporation in the repair.

Oedema tail is associated with aggressive infiltrative tumours; 26% of them had tumour cells that would remain if we resected the tumour with a wide R0 margin, even with preoperative radiation.
