Happy World Curlew Day!
Saw this one at Portishead, December 2025. I was fascinated by its dexterity searching small crevices, and managing a crab it had picked up. #worldcurlewday #curlew #nature #ukwildlife #avonbirds @curlewaction.bsky.social

Green-veined White butterfly at Gwent Wildlife Trust's Magor Marsh (20.04.26). The first three are female, and the last male; they are identifiable by the more extensive black markings on the upperside of the female. #ukbutterflies #ukwildlife
I love listening to the Sedge Warbler. Their song is a joyous cascade of notes and never the same twice. Great that they’re back from Africa for the summer. This one was tucked amongst the reeds at Gwent Wildlife Trust’s Magor Marsh. (20.04.26) #birdingwales #ukwildlife
An unexpected delight - a Common Sandpiper on the Afon Taff, near St. Clears in Carmarthenshire - 18.04.26. I see them fairly regularly on a tidal section of the River Avon near home, but haven't seen them at this location before. Returning after over-wintering in Africa. #birdingwales #ukwildlife
The female Orange-tip butterfly lacks the vivid splash of orange that the males have. The underside of the hindwing of each is, however, similar, carrying lovely green mottling. Once settled with their wings closed, they can be quite difficult to spot! (Bristol - 16.04.26) #ukbutterflies #ukwildlife
Grey Wagtail in a stream with a Mayfly its beak
Cormorant in a lake with a fish in its beak
Curlew on a shore line with a crab in its beak
Redwing in a tree with a berry in its beak
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #ComeEatWithMe, birds with food in their beaks. So, here's a Grey Wagtail with a Mayfly, a Cormorant with a fish, a Curlew with a crab, and a Redwing with a berry. #ukwildlife #birds @robcrank68.bsky.social
Yes, an outstanding book.
A Blue Tit on a branch in January 2025
A young Blue Tit on a branch in June 2025
A tired looking Blue Tit on a branch in July 2025
A tired looking Blue Tit on a branch in August 2025 (and it's raining)
#BirdOfTheDay theme is #FeederFriends, birds you might see at your feeder. Blue Tits are common garden visitors, looking pristine early in the year. The young are a delight, but tending them can leave the adults looking worse for wear as the year progresses! #ukwildlife #birds @alan678.bsky.social
Photographed yesterday at Lamplighters Marsh (Bristol) - This yellow and black hoverfly is Myathropa florea. It's commonly called the 'Batman' hoverfly because of the shape of the marking on the top of the thorax. (16.04.26) #hoverflies #ukhoverflies #invertebrate #ukwildlife

The #BirdOfTheDay theme today is #LeafandLight any bird captured in sunlight with leaves in frame - set by Alan.
This adult Starling and a young one were photographed in my Bristol (UK) back garden in May 2025. #avonbirds #ukwildlife #birds @alan678.bsky.social
Well the wind eased a little, the rain stopped, the sun came out… and soon after a lovely Holly Blue butterfly appeared in the garden. She was good enough to sit still for a short while and let me take photos. (Bristol, 15.04.26) #ukbutterlies #ukwildlife
Speckled Wood butterfly at Lamplighters Marsh (Bristol). 13.04.26 #ukbutterflies #ukwildlife @ukbutterflies.bsky.social
Yes, I caught it’s movement quite close by and luckily spotted where it settled - even more lucky was finding a gap through the branches! 🙂
Nice to catch sight of this Dunnock through a tangle of branches at Lamplighters Marsh, Bristol, this morning. (13.04.26) #avonbirds #ukwildlife #birds
So there I was photographing this female Holly Blue butterfly in the back garden, when she suddenly gained a suitor! Bristol 08.04.26 #ukbutterflies #ukwildlife @ukbutterflies.bsky.social
A colony of Grey Heron and Little Egret nesting in trees.
The heronry at Magor Marsh (Gwent WT) was active a couple of days ago. Grey Heron and Little Egret filling the trees at the back of the pond. 07.04.26 #birdingwales #ukwildlife #birds
Wren are so loud! This one was singing away yesterday at Gwent Wildlife Trust Magor Marsh (07.04.26). #birdingwales #ukwildlife #birds
They were! 🙂
Well this was an unexpected and delightful surprise at Gwent Wildlife Trust Magor Marsh today. A family of two adult Little Grebe with four chicks. Lovely to watch across the pond - the adults were quite active, continually diving and feeding their chicks. (07.04.26) #birdingwales #ukwildlife #birds
Speckled Wood butterfly
Small Tortoiseshell butterfly
Green-veined White
More #ukbutterflies locally over the Easter weekend. Having seen five species of butterfly at Lamplighers Marsh, Bristol, on Saturday, I found three more species yesterday (Monday, 06.04.26): Speckled Wood, Small Tortoiseshell and Green-veined White. That's a good start for the year! #ukwildlife
Holly Blue butterfly on vegetation
Small White butterfly on vegetation
Peacock butterfly on vegetation
Comma butterfly on vegetation
Besides the Orange-tip seen at Lamplighters Marsh, Bristol (see earlier post), I saw four additional butterfly species - Holly Blue, Small White, Peacock and Comma. The latter two will have hibernated as adults over winter, while the first tow are newly emerged. (04.04.26) #ukbutterflies #ukwildlife
It always feels like Spring is well and truly here when I catch sight of an Orange-tip butterfly! 🙂 It was great to see my first of the year yesterday. Daisy Field (part of Lamplighters Marsh, Bristol) 04.04.26 #ukbutterflies #ukwildlife
Took a short walk in the Daisy Field (Lamplighters Marsh, Bristol) giving the @btobirds.bsky.social Birds in Greenspaces app an airing. Besides the usual suspects including Wren, Chiffchaff, Robin, Blue Tit & Great Tit nice to see a Buzzard and a fly past from a Kestrel! 04.04.26 #avonbirds #birds
For the UK dragonfly enthusiasts - a useful guide on what to look out for through the year.
Peacock butterfly with red wings and distinctive eye shaped markings. Sat on the ground with wings spread catching the sun.
Comma butterfly exposing its orange wings to catch the sun, while sat on a bramble leaf
Saw Brimstone, Small White, Peacock and Comma butterfly today. The first two were moving endlessly, but I managed to catch pictures of the latter two. Lovely seeing more #ukbutterflies about now, even on a cool day. Lower Failand, North Somerset (02.04.26). #ukwildlife #insectphotography
Heard well before seen, but so nice finally spy a pair of Nuthatch browsing around woodland near Lower Failand, North Somerset. Way up high in the trees ... #avonbirds #somersetbirding #ukwildlife

Happily the one I saw locally (Bristol) a couple of days ago wasn’t so restless and was content to pose for photos!
