NIH grant terminations affected women scientists more than men, study finds A new paper shows that women, particularly those early in their careers, have been disproportionately affected by NIH grant terminations

A new paper suggests that grant terminations from the NIH over the past year may have further punctured the so-called "leaky pipeline" because women were more impacted by grant terminations than men

Whenever I hear about the leaky pipeline, I recall an interview I saw when I was an undergrad with a woman in STEM who said "I'm all for getting more women into the pipeline but people don't realize that the pipeline is full of acid."

NIH and other grant terminations exacerbate this situation.

A children's hospital is renamed for Dolly Parton and hopes to transform pediatric care in Tennessee Dolly Parton’s name might inspire full-throated sing-a-longs to her working woman’s anthem “9 to 5,” or evoke memories of thrilling days spent at her Dollywood theme park.

“Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital did not share how much Parton donated as part of the naming announcement. But Matt Schaefer, its president and CEO, said her support would ensure ‘every child who walks through our doors receives the treatment they deserve.’”

GOD BLESS DOLLY PARTON

White noise in an analytical core lab #NMR - how much is acceptable?

I’m moving 2 NMRs, and the new space has noisy pipes and ducts in it. My phone app dB meter shows “inside of a car” levels w/o even any equipment in it. I worry about distraction and spectrum noise. 1/

In genetics:
'Trans-acting' = a gene exerts influence on another gene on a different chromosome.
'Expression' = when a gene produces an effect in the cell

They tagged two of the most common terms in genetic research for defunding because we put fascist tech-bros in charge of our science. 😠

My genuine response to this would be to continue to do research, answering the same questions I try to answer now, but in a much more radical, liberated, and liberatory way. ✨👩🏻‍🔬 #AcademicSky #KnowledgePowerToThePeople

This chemist had a tenure-track job offer in the US when they decided to leave the country Why Evan Spotte-Smith made that choice, and how they are finding the experience

Well, it's finally up. Thanks @sarahbraner.bsky.social @cenmag.bsky.social for profiling me and my journey from @cmu.edu to @ucddublin.bsky.social. It's been a hell of a ride. I'm glad I'm here safe, at least.

It sucks being a chronically ill college student because I'll never be able to participate in club activities or go to parties because keeping up with the work takes all my energy.

My linocut of Annie Jump Cannon shows her in a 3/4 profile view wearing a shirt with a lace collar and her hair up. She is printed in a gradient of violet at the bottom to green at the top, printed on white 11” x 14” paper. The background is printed in a gradient (left to right) of dark blue, light blue, yellow, pale yellow, pale orange, orange and red. The background block excludes her silhouette of shoulder and head with the exception of a smattering of small dots in a swath from upper left to lower right (which extends to white spots on the coloured background). Also along the bottom are a series of circles of decreasing size (left to right, blue through red) labelled O, B, A, F, G, K, M. There’s a axis line along the bottom with 6 tick marks. Vertically from top to bottom along the left side are 15-, 10-, 5-, 0, 5, 20, 15.
