A close-up, profile shot of a Sacred Kingfisher perched on a thick, sun-dappled tree branch. The bird has pale buff underparts, a dark eye, and shimmering muted turquoise-blue wings. It holds a large cicada firmly in its beak; the insect's translucent, veined wings are spread wide, catching the light as it is about to be consumed. The background is a soft, out-of-focus mosaic of green leaves and bright bokeh, highlighting the sharp detail of the kingfisher’s feathers and its impressive catch.

This juvenile Sacred Kingfisher was treetop dining. The cicada was almost as big as him. 🐦🌳

He clutched onto the cicada forever - before going "Chomp." 🦗📸

Kākā burst back into Wellington after more than 70 years of regional extinction.
Scientists were concerned that public opinion might turn against the destructive & noisy birds, but they have become a much-loved poster child for Wellington’s conservation success.

To look at Bossons head-on is to face up to our collective responsibilities!

Lateral branches have now detached from lower body, and situation will be catastrophic by the end of next summer!

Retreat will accelerate further, leaving behind only memories of the most beautiful glacier in the Alps!

I missed International Bat Appreciation Day yesterday - but it's still April 17 in some parts of the world. This is a grey-headed flying-fox seen after dipping into the River Torrens in Adelaide on an extremely hot day. They are a threatened species and play an important role in our ecosystem.

A male tawny frogmouth perched on a tree branch. Its eyes are mostly closed, giving it a sleepy, relaxed expression, and its broad beak points slightly upward. Nestled against its chest is a small, fluffy chick with soft grey down, partially hidden among twigs.

This came up as a memory on my phone. It’s Dad with a baby tawny, but even I didn’t notice the chick until I looked harder ❤️

Photo of an immature male Gang-gang Cockatoo on the end of a thin broken branch. one foot is holding onto the branch, the other is raised as it repositions. The bird is grey with bars on the ends of all its feathers in colours ranging from cream to yellow to orange, with some green washes on the wings. Is head and crest are feathers are partially bright red.

As before, but the bird is lower on the branch holding onto it with both feet and is now facing down.

We didn't see many parrots while at Gluepot.
I mean, they were there. We'd occasionally see a group perform a fly-by but, with ephemeral pools after the rain in March, they didn't need to come in to drink at the water points. I got a few frames of this mulga parrot near the Whistler bird hide.

Had the first Black and White Tiger Moth (Ardices glatignyi) of the season visit our Perth Hills garden last night.

These lovely moths can be seen around Australia in autumn and winter but are more commonly seen in southern parts

Whetū's nest on Pukenui is tucked deep inside a hollow rātā tree—more than 2m above the forest floor. The height means fledging safely could be a hurdle for Whetū-A3. So Rangers have installed a nature-styled access ramp to provide a safe option for the fledgling. #Kakapo2026

Sand turd beetles. No kidding. That's their name.
While at Gluepot, we had been wondering what was making all the piles of red sand that looked like poo and it just so happened that there were experts camped near us who knew all about them!

A low-light photograph features a male Variegated Fairy-wren perched delicately on a thin, dark branch. The bird is seen from a side-rear angle, showcasing its vibrant breeding plumage: an iridescent electric-blue crown and cheek patches that contrast sharply against a velvet-black neck and back. A rich chestnut-brown patch glows on its shoulder, transitioning into a soft, creamy-white underbelly. Its long, slender tail is held characteristically upright, pointing toward the top of the frame. The background is deeply shadowed and atmospheric, with soft-focus hints of dark green foliage, making the bird’s brilliant colours appear to glow against the moody, dark setting.

A quiet exit into the dark. 🌌 Letting the noise of the day fall away until only the stillness remains. 🧘‍♀️
