We've been busy over the past weeks setting up #WETSCAPES2.0 research sites in already wet or to be rewetted #peatlands. Big thanks to our newest team members, the two "greenhorns" BetramM and RamMona 😉, who really pulled their weight helping us to build fence posts! @greifswaldmoor.bsky.social

In general: Connecting sensor and node is easy and can be done with a simple screwdriver. It gets a bit more complicated on the software side, programming the node to send data and retrieving it from the cloud, but nothing impossible if you really set your mind to it.

I completely understand and until recently would have said the same. However, now we have a project that is running on ~80 sites that are spread out over a large area. Since we can't visit every fen regularly, the ability to retrieve live data is really helpful in monitoring sensor health.

Red peat mosses never get old... 😍

Had a fantastic day in the field with colleagues from practice and science, sharing experiences on #bog #restoration.

Fresh air, feet amongst living #Sphagnum, a flock (!) of eagles overhead: It doesn't get any better than this!

Do you also think that there is still too little research on methane exchange of alder trees? Here is one new little puzzle piece from our lab:

Hey #peatland ppl! Do you also get stupidly excited when you find music with peat references, or is it just me? 🎶
I just stumbled across this song and it made me so happy 😀. What's your favourite peatland-related song?

What a huge scale! Last week we walked >16 km across a drained peat grassland to select study plots at our #wetscapes2.0 landscape-level experiment on peatland #rewetting. Soon sneakers won't be a suitable any more, and frogs don't have to rely on drainage ditches to thrive!

Kicking off WETSCAPES 2.0! This week marked the start of the first @dfg.de collaborative research center dedicated to researching rewetted fens. Over 50 scientists discussed the 100 screening sites, 5 core sites, and 2 landscape-level experiments. And we installed the first of our 1,000 sensors!

Winter is for finishing, recalibrating and community. Today we combined it all and cleaned up our longest running field site, which looks like a lake but is actually a #peatland, in a joined effort by Universities of Rostock and Greifswald. Wishing you all a joyful end of the year!

Peat profile with mineral layer between 14 and 32 cm depth.

Maybe humans? Here in northern Germany some #peatlands were covered with sand or other debris, in order to "improve" properties for cultivation. The profile in the picture contained a middle layer of, among other things, brick fragments.

Absolutely can't wait to work (again) in such a strong consortium! At the Rostock Landscape Ecology group we will focus on studying vegetation patterns within and surrounding #rewetted #peatlands, exchange processes, and on providing research data infrastructure and environmental data. Let's go!

Rapid shift in methane carbon isotopes suggests microbial emissions drove record high atmospheric methane growth in 2020–2022 | PNAS The growth rate of the atmospheric abundance of methane (CH4) reached a record high of 15.4 ppb yr−1 between 2020 and 2022, but the mechanisms driv...

The positive feedback between climate change and peatland methane emissions (www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...) forces us to reduce anthropogenic methane emissions from fossil fuels and agriculture ASAP.
