It's part of an artificial collection of random letters (D364). We're not sure who collected them originally, but it may have been Col J R Colville, who was a local historian.

A letter written in black ink on cream paper from William Martyn in London to Thomas Cole in Devon on 13 October 1681.

A letter written in black ink on cream paper from William Martyn in London to Thomas Cole in Devon on 13 October 1681.

Our #ArchiveOfTheWeek is this 1681 letter, in which William Martyn in London complains about a mortifying rumour that had reached his family in Devon, "a mere sham in my Mothers sickness to alienate her affections from me". The rumour? That he was courting the King's mistress, Nell Gwyn 😱

A long thin strip of green paper. Printed on it is the text: Tea vouchers No 1.

On #NationalTeaDay this is the first tea voucher issued to county council staff after their move from Derby to Matlock on 31 March 1958 - as far as we know we don't have a picture of either the colleague delivering the tea or the tea trolley...

Arguably, an archivist is trained to throw things away, that is to identify which records should be permanently preserved and which should not. Visit our blog for more #AboutAppraisals and the archivist's role in selecting records: recordoffice.wordpre...

An engraved image showing large buildings ornately decorated. The middle building straddles the corner junction of a street and has 'royal hotel' written above it. The neighbouring building has 'post office' written above it. The second to last building in the picture has 'Derby and Derbyshire Banking Company' written above it. In the street below are various people in Victorian dress, including many horses and carriages.

This engraving from around 1850 shows the Athaneum Royal Hotel, Post Office and Derby and Derbyshire Banking Co buildings in Derby. If you know Derby at all, this scene still looks somewhat familiar, albeit changed. The buildings still exist on the junction of Cornmarket and Albert Street.

Here’s a short video showing what digital preservation involves. In this case, a file only works from a CD and can’t just be copied to our network—so we have to convert it into a playable format.

Are you a fan of TVs Traffic Cops? Do you enjoy seeing their cars full of modern gadgets and technology? Well, here’s the 1973 equivalent of the police cars of today. This is a BMW 5 Series used on the M1. No doubt a very different driving experience.

One #ArchiveMyth is that local archive services only hold records about their area. Nothing could be further from the truth! Here for example is New Zealand, Brazil, Hawaii, Madeira, the Philippines and USA all on one page, courtesy of Cunard Line stewardess Nellie Hodgkins of Bolsover.

Our #ArchiveOfTheWeek is the 1694 will of Thomas Wilson of Codnor, who decided all his books would go to his namesake grandson, with one exception: his "mathematical bookes & instruments" go to John Harris, another relative - who would presumably value them more.

This is PC Derek Smithurst using a police telephone box, in the Cornmarket, Derby c.1959. We particularly like the design feature of a little shelf for him to rest his notebook on while he takes down details.

The "three pairs of tiny boots" that were sent to Eleanor Gell in 1851 when she was about to give birth to her second child certainly count as #SomethingSmall. But can you find where they are referred to on this cross-hatched letter?

Did the Easter Bunny visit on Sunday? Here’s a glimpse of his wilder, and more elusive cousin the mountain hare in his winter coat snapped by a Peak Park photographer in 1994. Curiously, the bunny was originally a hare in German folklore, so maybe he did visit after all! #LandscapesUnlocked
