Today's #Archive30 is #ArchiveConservation
Over the last few years our librarian has been slowly improving her conservation skills in paper repair and #bookbinding - so we can now do repairs like this resewing and spine repair on a catalogue book in-house!
a collage of 6 photos showing various sections of a cloth embroidered banner
This gorgeous banner is the perfect example of why conservation is so important to help preserve our history.
The Church of England Working Men’s Society banner is 140 years old, dating back to 1886!

A close-up of a parchment document with a hole in it.
A conservator is paring a small piece of parchment with a scalpel, to make it the correct shape to fit the existing hole.
This image shows the pared repair piece of parchment partially stuck down with gelatine.
A parchment document with seal attached. It has a hole in the middle, which has been successfully repaired.
#ArchiveConservation also includes repairing documents on parchment. Here one of our conservators carries out such a repair, by paring down a new piece of parchment and adhering it to the original with gelatine.

A large and relatively thick ledger standing on a table. It is covered front, back and on both edges by cover or jacket in grey conservation grade cards, with two ribbon handles at the spine end to make it easier to get it off the shelf.
This impressive cardboard contraption was especially made by a conservator for our 19th century charge ledger from Beckenham Police Station.

Blue bound volume, Nathanael Low's Almanack 1784 Boston
Astronomical Diary or Almanack for the year of Christian Era, 1784 Being Bissextile of Leap Year, and the Eight of the Independence of America. Part of the right corner of the page was ripped away and has been stabilized with added paper
Old book page with numersous spots and visible mending in the right corner, covering some text. Of the Eclipses for the Year 1784
We can't do much in-house but sometimes works come to us with previous conservation work. One of our newest items, Nathanel Low's Almanack (1784) has mending on its first page. While it stabilized the page, it also obscured some of the text #ArchiveConservation #Archive30 #Archives #RevolutionaryWar

A Women’s indigo-dyed wrapper from Ivory Coast, mid-C20th from the Thakar Collection for #ArchiveMythology. Across West Africa, indigo signified wealth & abundance & even had its own deity, Iya Mopo, to ensure successful dyeing.

Many years ago, a robber (or highwayman), being closely pursued by the Watch or local parish constables, hid his ill-gotten gains in the hollow of an elm tree on and near Oldfield Farm. He was subsequently captured and imprisoned for his misdeeds. When he was released, he returned to the tree, but found that his bag of gold had fallen more deeply into the tree, and the crack had closed up partially, so he was unable to reach his treasure. This was a common tradition in the village about 75 years ago, and the holes at the top of the crack in the tree trunk was then large enough to put one’s arm in. The crack was still visible on Feb 22, 1942, but the hole is now closed up. It was quite large when I was a boy in 1884.

Berkshire is home to many myths and legends. The newly received records of the Berkshire Local History recording scheme from the 1940s include many. One of our favourites is about the Treasure Tree in Baulking. Let us know your favourite Berkshire myth? #ArchiveMyths #Archive30

Are archives just for academics? We love our academic researchers but everyone is welcome whether you're a family historian, someone working on a school project, a medical practitioner or just a wee bit nosey!
Day 16: #ArchiveMyth #Archive30
Whilst we do not operate in quite the same way as a library or museum, we do provide a public service for the local community and overseas researchers.

Black and white photograph of a bareheaded young man sitting at a table with a top hat inverted on it. He wears a dark blue tailcoat with shiny buttons and 417.N on its high collar.
We haven't had one recently, but there was a spate of genealogy enquirers expecting us as a matter of course to have photographs of their ancestors who joined in the 1830s ...

A page from a photograph album with nine snapshots from the 1920s. They are labelled Rio; Fjord,New Zealand; Oxen cart, Madeira; Santa Ana Cabaret, Manila; Franconia, Los Angeles; Honolulu; Broken rail in storm, Franconia [ship]; Manila lady.
One #ArchiveMyth is that local archive services only hold records about their area. Nothing could be further from the truth! Here for example is New Zealand, Brazil, Hawaii, Madeira, the Philippines and USA all on one page, courtesy of Cunard Line stewardess Nellie Hodgkins of Bolsover.

#DidYouKnow that #Caerleon has links to the #ArchiveMyths of King Arthur and his Round Table? For many years the Roman Amphitheatre was also considered to be the site of Arthur’s Round Table and is named as such on various maps and plans.

Items in the Thakar Collection are carefully stored in acid-free packaging in a climate-controlled #ArchiveStorage room. Garments are bagged & hung on racks to prevent creasing, while #textiles are rolled onto supports & stored in boxes. #Archive30 @arascot.bsky.social #antiquetextiles #archives
There is no one way to store archives. Most items are stored in special archive boxes (like on the right), but some larger flat items (like plans, boards and photographs) are stored in very large drawers. We also have map tanks, metal cabinets and tubes #ArchiveStorage #Archive30
For #ArchiveStorage we wanted to show you how useful our new large floor standing guillotine is and how we use it to store oversize items. #Archive30

#Throwback Friday anyone? This video shows the amount of #ArchiveStorage boxes we used for our Bracknell District Council collection! We re-organised the whole collection in early March 2020 to make access for visitors easier. #Archive30
Day 17: #ArchiveStorage #Archive30
We are very fortunate to now have a purpose-built archive facility, however in the past storage arrangements were rather more vulnerable than they are today!

As a digital archive, we don't have physical storage
It's not ideal to have to hand back film to owners once digitised but amateur movies such as Rev Allen's are too precious not to save so better that than not to to have them at all
