Past Julia couldn’t have imagined where that opportunity would eventually lead her, but present Julia is so happy that she took that chance. 🥰❤️

Black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) readily consume Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) in the Canadian Arctic: insights from stomach content and stable isotope analyses The Arctic is undergoing rapid declines in sea ice and changes in Arctic ecosystems. Future work should include other methods, such as #regurgitates and #faecalsamples, to better understand #black-leggedkittiwake diet in Arctic Canada.

Nevertheless, as #climatechange impacts increase, this study provides benchmark data for monitoring changes in this #sentinel #seabird and its prey.

After accounting for dietary discrimination, #δ13C and #δ15N #isotope values in kittiwake livers were at a lower #trophiclevel than Arctic cod.

What does this mean? While kittiwakes do consume Arctic cod (as seen in stomachs), stomach analysis may underestimate soft tissue prey, such as #inverts.

Bar graph showing Arctic cod as the dominant prey type, where Arctic char, Northern prawn, and Euphasiidae species only have one occurrence each.

Based on #StomachContents alone, #prey did not differ between regions, where the dominant prey was Arctic #cod.

However, only two soft-bodied #invertebrates were identified in stomachs, as most prey items were heavily digested.

So what are we missing? #StableIsotopes can help answer this.

The diet of one of the most abundant Arctic #seabirds, the black-legged #kittiwake, has been used as an #EcosystemIndicator in Europe, yet little is known about diet in #ArcticCanada.

We examined the diet of kittiwakes near #Qikiqtarjuaq and #Mittimatalik, #Nunavut, using multiple methods.

Arrows point to "Reduced negative impacts" and "Increased negative impacts." Figure b shows a scatter plot of effect size vs thermal position with a fish illustration on top. "Biomass change estimates" indicated by circle size.

A study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution reports that long-term ocean warming reduces global fish biomass by up to 19.8% annually. Warmer years and marine heatwaves were linked to sharp biomass losses of up to 43.4%. go.nature.com/40b6AIB 🧪 🌍

#BlackGuillemots are widely distributed #seabirds, nesting under rocks along coastlines, which makes surveying an entire population challenging.

This project is a great example of #CommunityBasedMonitoring that will support the assessment of #guillemot populations in the UK!
