The diet of one of the most abundant Arctic #seabirds, the black-legged #kittiwake, has been used as an #EcosystemIndicator in Europe, yet little is known about diet in #ArcticCanada.
We examined the diet of kittiwakes near #Qikiqtarjuaq and #Mittimatalik, #Nunavut, using multiple methods.

You are looking at a small, elegant seabird standing on a mound of smooth, rounded ice. The bird’s body is facing slightly toward you, but its head is tilted downward in a gentle, thoughtful pose. The bird is mostly pure white all over — its body, head, and underwings have a clean, snowy brightness that blends with the icy surface beneath it. Its wings are fully spread wide to either side, creating a broad, sweeping shape like an open fan or airplane wings in flight. Along the very outer edges of the wings, you can feel (if imagining by touch) a narrow, dark border — like a thin line drawn along the tips of each wing. These dark markings contrast sharply with the rest of the bird’s whiteness. The bird’s neck is short, and around it is a faint ring of darker feathers, like a subtle collar. Its head is rounded, smooth, and bright white, with a small, pointed black beak that curves slightly at the tip. The eyes are small and dark, giving the bird a focused, calm expression. The ice beneath the bird rises in a soft dome, as if the bird is perched atop a frozen hill. The background is a cool, muted blue-gray sky or sea mist — smooth, calm, and slightly hazy, with no other objects visible. Even iets heel anders: in Denemarken zijn we bij de plek geweest waar veel drieteenmeeuwen broeden. Ze zitten hoog en droog op een grote rots, maar met de telelens waren ze goed te zien. Het valt mij op wat een ontzettend mooie vogel de #drieteenmeeuw is.
