About an hour into the forest I wasn't lost exactly but hadn't really decided where I was going. I stopped by this swampy waterway to look around and take a break. I couldn't see anything to photograph but the light was beautiful, flickering as the clouds moved quickly overhead. These few branches shone compared to the dark water below so I took a few shots. Then I sat down, drank some coffee and listened to the whistling wind and the birds singing their sweet and desperate songs. I find days are always better if you can sit in the forest away from the madness. It quiets the mind.
In the dark forest, three's a charm.

A moody sunrise photo captures a favorite Edinburgh spot with dramatic urban atmosphere. street stretches into the distance, flanked by ornate Victorian buildings in warm orange hues from the rising sun. Overhead tram wires crisscross against a cloudy purple and gray sky, with traffic lights glowing red amid bare winter trees. In the background, a prominent gothic spire (balmoral hotel, scott monument and Calton hill) rises tall, evoking Robert Burns' poetic praise of Edina. The low-angle perspective adds depth and magic to this moody urban scene in Scotland.
My favourite spot for sunrise photos of Edinburgh. :)
Edina! Scotia's darling seat!
All hail thy palaces and tow'rs,
Where once, beneath a Monarch's feet,
Sat Legislation's sov'reign pow'rs!
(Robert Burns)

A Fern unfurling
Pteridium aquilinum - The former means ‘little wing’ and the latter ‘eagle’
Eagle Fern is so much better than Bracken, because when mature, the large outstretched fronds resemble an eagle's wingspan

Primula, ladybird and butterfly (gouache on paper) 18th century, Barbara Regina Dietzsch.
More wonderful stained glass from St Michael’s Church, Doddiscombsleigh, Devon.
Restored at least twice since the 15th century, the central figure is a Victorian interpretation, but a lot of the original glass has survived.

View across the vast outwash plain of Skeiðarársandur, with the braided channels of the Skeiðará winding through the landscape in pale, silvery lines. In the foreground, low shrubs, grasses, and clusters of wild plants grow along a slightly elevated edge, their green tones contrasting with the muted colors of the plain below. Beyond, the sandur stretches endlessly, patterned with shallow watercourses, patches of green vegetation, and dark volcanic sediments. Sunlight breaks through heavy, layered clouds, casting moving bands of light and shadow across the terrain, creating a patchwork of illuminated and shaded areas. In the far distance, a thin, faint line marks the North Atlantic, barely distinguishable beneath the low horizon, with subtle hints of coastal cliffs merging into the haze. Above, a dramatic sky filled with dense, textured clouds dominates the scene, adding depth and a sense of motion. The overall impression is one of immense scale and quiet transformation, as light, water, and land continuously reshape the landscape.
There is a kind of peace that can only be found in vast, empty places.

A bend in the River Wey which has reflections and shimmering water. Photo taken in February. The river is framed with dead undergrowth, trees on both sides and catkins hanging at the top.

As the clouds and rain bunker in along the waterway the boats are anchored awaiting their time for exploring.

I’m heading for Dartington this morning so here’s the granite font which was moved from old St Mary’s behind the Hall to the new church at Huxham’s Cross
Probably 15th century, though The pedestal and marble base are more recent.

My hard drive is full of 'the one that got away'—blurry wings and empty branches. But those misses are exactly what make the sharp shots feel like a victory. 😊
