It really does. (And I don't think I've ever seen an exclamation mark on a war memorial over here.)

A wooden war memorial panel in a Bavarian church porch, headed 'GOTT MIT UNS!' and with a long list of names, in each case with the unit the person served in and date of death.

Check out the detail on this memorial in Andechs, Bavaria. The panels go from the 1866 war with Austria to the late 40s - including those who died in Soviet camps. The tone of the headings changes from belligerent to melancholic over time. I'll fish them all out & post when I get a mo.

A circular mosaic with a brick surround, depicting a bearded male figure in a horned helmet, sat on a throne surrounded by curling waves. It was created in 1995 by Maggy Howarth and is installed in the pavement at the top of Heritage Way.

Pebble mosaic of 'King Canute', at #Knutsford. Local tradition is that the place is named for him, though that only goes back the the C17; it could be from the Old English 'cnottan-ford', 'ford at a hillock'.

No problem! The place is called "Edgar's Field", only a couple of hundred yards from the bridge.

The shrine in context, on an outcrop of rock in a sloping field. The University of Chester's Wheeler building is visible across the River Dee in the background. It is a sunny day.

Shrine to the goddess #Minerva, Edgar's Field, #Chester. Second century (with modern surround), carved on a quarry wall; the only one to survive in situ in Britain. You can find it in Handbridge, just across the Old Dee Bridge from the city centre.

Great - I should be able to call in tomorrow, on the way to @sthelenstownafc.bsky.social / Matty Lees' festival of football at Ruskin.

Cheers Mike. I can't make the Cricks, unfortunately, but I will pick one up from The Book Stop (a shareholder's duty discharged, serving two good purposes).

Atlas of Hillforts:Β Β Castercliff Scroll left/right to view further images.

It has been dug a couple of times, in 1958-60 and 1982. Only the latter published,

And likewise on visiting: I used to visit Nelson for work, but I didn't know about the fort then. Drat.

P.S. I should mention, given recent events, that Manchester Museum acquired it at auction.

Iron Age torc made from twisted gold, unearthed by ploughing at Cliviger, #Burnley in 1802. The area isn't a hot spot for prehistoric finds, so it is quite something. Manchester Museum acquired it in 1960.

A wooden double door set into a Roman arched doorway. The surround is a simple painted band, in a shade of peach, in a white wall. A solid-looking drainpipe runs up the wall to the right.

A simple, attractive side-door at the church at Kloster Andechs, #Bavaria. The Heilige Berg was pleasantly quiet last week, but in the summer months it attracts large crowds that make contemplation - of eternity or doors - near impossible.

A stone built terraced house with a small blue plaque next to the door. It isn't legible in the photo, but commemorates Wallace Hartley having lived in the house from 1890-1895.

There is a plaque on the house he lived in on Albert Road in Colne, too.

A colour portrait aspect photograph of a stone doorway, with large posts but the lintel missing. The ground slopes upwards away from the camera, through the doorway, reaching a short wooden staircase to a higher level beyond. There are bare trees in the background, and a grey sky.

A large, square tower, with sharp right angled corners. It is made from rubble and has few eye-catching features on this face. It stands on the edge of a road, which has a car and a motorhome parked on it.

The dominant colours are grey, pale blue and other pastel shades.

The Priory Tower, at Much Wenlock. Thirteenth century, probably part of an entrance gateway to the monastic precinct (though this is sometimes debated). GII Listed.
