Fantastic morning spent with @AmandaTuke urban plant hunting around Stoke canals & talking about her exceptionally inspiring new book Wild Pavements 🌱 πŸ“˜

It's been a while since I shared this πŸ’š

I've added some new contributors from #dailynature
(πŸ‘‹ @iand777.bsky.social & @wellmanneredxs.bsky.social )

Are you writing on nature? Know someone great to add to the list?

A two beat warning followed by a short stepping four stopped morse code bow, black orb rising out from pussy willow frills, eyes appearing on the orb then banana beak as it dives over the roof onto next doors bow. Blackbirds rarely stand on boats, or do they just prefer black boats?

What a gift today has been πŸ’š

I've never seen a stoat so close, despite originally naming our boat after them - this little one wasn't bothered about my presence, much more concerned about a rather large crow!

Glints of gold dust themselves across the verge, blinking slowly away into a seminar of green - carrot speckled now, cabbage flickering next, apricot slices fluttering against gravity. First orange tip butterfly spotted from afar, delicate wings dipped in tangerine mod eyeshadow.

Aerfen the river spirit cries over the Chester basin today, that cold sap of spring, the glue that brings forth flowers, strung in diamonds across sleeping spiders paths - a sky that sings with tears as the birds do with their feathers.

Chutney throats flash past, polar bellies dive, caped by navy feathers ending in a stars bow legged stance - spotted my first swallows of the year, flown over as a three, twisting, turning, torn by the wind - warning me of flash clouds now wobbling my boat about 🐦

It’s difficult to express how much I enjoy and have come to rely on this podcast. It’s my 4am nightlight; a grounding and inspiring listening space. Richard really welcomes you into his world which is full of appreciation, love and wisdom. A truly beautiful creation. Thank you"

April, aperire, to open and so the world does. That fresh cucumber slice of morning drift as nights fig dress turns to a buttery morning gold has me awake and open to the world. Good morning everyone β˜€οΈ

I was an aid in HE for theoretical maths, a greek tutor placed dolmades on his 'plate' (black holes) - my love of vine leaves has never been so useful - then a russian tutor used borscht for surface dimension... Now I'm (kind of) a travel writer... I think it gave me a thirst for national dishes?

OS map showing old Crannaford next to very new Cranbrook, in Devon.

Bird place-name of the day 144, cont. crane series: CRANNAFORD (Dev). OE cran + ford. β€˜Cranes’ ford’. Cranbrook, the more obvious of the two in the map, is a brand new town! The name was presumably borrowed from Crannaford. (Bonus rook place in there too!) #PlaceNames #birdsandplace #naturewriting

It didn't behave
like anything you had
ever imagined. The wind
tore at the trees, the rain
fell for days slant and hard.

Wind,
1 word, 2 sounds, 3 meanings

1. Wih-nd, said like the action, natural, 90mphr incoming, strikes down warrior trees into canals
2. Whih-ndin, as in winding hole, used to turn my boat, difficult in the above
3. Wy-nd, similar but taught like the ropes used to batten down during a storm

The Librarians are not the enemy. Great piece on this nightmarish conduct @katiedd.bsky.social. I stocked these books in my school library, issuing them with care/ age restrictions too. The librarian was threatened with disciplinary action, labeled a safeguarding risk & resigned. Follow up below.

Oh wow! We had maybe 4 days of no rain but they were heady and broke to clouds, likely you're getting the show of what's to come at your end - grateful for the deluge opener to the year then. Beautiful, there's an abundance of blackbirds compared to last year, but maybe we're just getting more north
