Trace elements incorporated into grains of pyrite preserve information about the chemistry of ancient oceans, allowing researchers to reconstruct the interplay of biology and tectonics driving long-term oxygen fluctuations. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/RJSO50YwsLC

Schematic of springtime Pacific and Atlantic sea surface temperature variations driving convection and facilitating La Niña events.

Predicting El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events can be tricky. Researchers show that regions exceeding 26 °C in the east-central Pacific and 28.5 °C in the eastern Atlantic during spring are critical thresholds for ENSO development. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/mQQr50YvVrm

Wetlands can be carbon sinks or sources, depending on management strategies. A study of CO2 and methane fluxes in the Everglades highlights the role of freshwater flows in minimizing methane emissions and the power of mangroves to store carbon. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/tfIn50Yl7yN

The collapse of curiosity driven research has occurred in STEM too. Everything has to be outcomes focused - cure disease, grow better crops, etc. But so much of what humanity has discovered is from "basic" curiosity-driven science. I'm hugely in favor of funding curiosity in every discipline.
