A single mature tree can cool the air as much as 10 air conditioners running for 20 hours!
Trees are nature’s climate control, protecting people and the planet.

Artist’s illustration of a pristine pyrite grain as an archive of Earth's 3.5-billion-year transition to an oxygenated atmosphere, showing machine learning “threads” extracting redox patterns from the mineral’s lattice and the reconstructed pulses of atmospheric oxygen. CREDIT: Zhen-Jie Zhang.
Trace elements incorporated into grains of pyrite preserve information about the chemistry of ancient oceans, allowing researchers to reconstruct the interplay of biology and tectonics driving long-term oxygen fluctuations. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/RJSO50YwsLC
Schematic of springtime Pacific and Atlantic sea surface temperature variations driving convection and facilitating La Niña events.
Predicting El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events can be tricky. Researchers show that regions exceeding 26 °C in the east-central Pacific and 28.5 °C in the eastern Atlantic during spring are critical thresholds for ENSO development. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/mQQr50YvVrm

Turning degraded lands into a forest-positive bioeconomy in Indonesia
New research shows how integrated food & energy systems on degraded land can boost livelihoods, climate resilience & growth, without further deforestation.

Mangroves, sawgrass, and hammock tree islands meet where salty and fresh waters converge in Everglades National Park. CREDIT: Cheryl Doughty
Wetlands can be carbon sinks or sources, depending on management strategies. A study of CO2 and methane fluxes in the Everglades highlights the role of freshwater flows in minimizing methane emissions and the power of mangroves to store carbon. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/tfIn50Yl7yN

Example of phytolith morphotypes identified in the study. Text: Microscopic evidence in soil reveals forest garden's past
SFU INDG assistant professor Chelsey Geralda Armstrong and her research team examined soil phytoliths to understand the distant past of Lhemqwó:tel, a forest garden in Sts’ailes territory on the Harrison River. Story: www.sfu.ca/indg/news-ev...
The collapse of curiosity driven research has occurred in STEM too. Everything has to be outcomes focused - cure disease, grow better crops, etc. But so much of what humanity has discovered is from "basic" curiosity-driven science. I'm hugely in favor of funding curiosity in every discipline.
Excited to have this paper out showing a strong coupling between Central American tree-ring oxygen isotopes and ocean–atmosphere dynamics (interbasin SST gradients, ITCZ, CLLJ... ). Many thanks to all co-authors!

Spring is definitely in the air! 🌱 Caught some photos of a bumble bee investigating the newly arisen snowdrops at the allotment. The beauty of nature never ceases to amaze. #allotmentlife #bumblebee #snowdrops
Every business depends on biodiversity, and every business impacts it.
The first-ever Business and Biodiversity Report finds that businesses are central to halting and reversing biodiversity loss, and outlines concrete actions.

CO2-driven warming during the Pliocene can be used as an analog for present-day warming. A temperature record from a Colombian sedimentary core suggests that the tropics were 4.8 °C warmer in the Pliocene than during the late Pleistocene. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/iJ1c50YbG8B
