Hidden carbon in mangroves: How "black carbon" strengthens coastal climate protection By mapping their spatial distribution and identifying environmental controls, researchers show that plant growth, soil chemistry, and tidal processes jointly regulate these highly stable carbon pools. BC, produced by incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels, consists of highly condensed carbon structures that can persist for centuries to millennia. Part of it dissolves into water as dissolved black carbon (DBC), a mobile form that transports carbon from land to aquatic systems and influences global carbon cycling. Mangrove ecosystems, known as “blue carbon” habitats, store large amounts of carbon in waterlogged soils that slow decomposition. Despite their major role in coastal carbon storage, the distribution and dynamics of BC in mangrove soils remain poorly understood, limiting accurate assessments of coastal carbon sequestration and transport processes. A study (DOI: 10.48130/ebp-0026-0001) published in Environmental and Biogeochemical Processes on 28 January 2026 by Junjian Wang’s team, Southern University of Science and Technology, reveals how black carbon dynamics enhance long-term carbon storage and connect terrestrial and marine carbon cycles in mangrove ecosystems. Using a land–sea transect and a soil-depth profile in Zhangjiang Estuary mangroves, the researchers quantified total organic carbon (TOC), BC, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and DBC, calculated key stoichiometric ratios, and then combined...

'Disappointed', says Debi Goenka, as apex court gives go-ahead to cut mangroves for key road project in north Mumbai Debi Goenka, often termed ‘Mumbai’s mangrove man’, has expressed disappointment at the March 20 decision of the Supreme Court to allow Mumbai’s civic body to cut thousands of mangroves for a key road project in the north of the city. “I am disappointed by the approach of the High Court, Supreme Court and the petitioners in the Supreme Court,” Goenka told Down To Earth on the phone from Mumbai. “There were many other issues that should have been raised and can still be raised,” he added. The question, said Goenka, was would it have been possible to minimise the damage to the mangroves by choosing another alignment. Could a coastal road have been substituted by a tunnel or an elevated road (like the Eastern Expressway in Mumbai)? “None of these options have been explored,” said Goenka. The long-time crusader, who has successfully fought a three-decade legal battle to protect Maharashtra’s mangrove forests, added that while the project has been projected as one that would reduce traffic congestion in Mumbai, it would do nothing of the sort. March 20 decision On March 20, the apex court in the national capital gave the go-ahead to Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation...

Mangrove waters are losing oxygen, putting fish nurseries at risk Mangrove forests are famous for protecting coastlines and sheltering young fish. But the water inside these tangled coastal habitats may not always be as safe as it appears. A new global study found that mangrove waters frequently slip into a stressful chemical state with very low oxygen and unusually high carbon dioxide. When that happens, the short windows when fish can safely enter mangrove nurseries begin to shrink. Because millions of juvenile fish rely on these flooded forests for food and protection, those hidden chemical swings could ripple outward through coastal ecosystems and fisheries that depend on them. Stress signals in mangrove waters Across 23 mangrove sites worldwide, tidal waters repeatedly swung into the same oxygen-poor, carbon dioxide-rich state that the study identified as a growing ecological stress. Gloria Reithmaier, a marine chemist at the University of Gothenburg, documented those chemical swings while examining how mangrove waters support fish and other marine life. In many systems, the stressful conditions appeared not as rare spikes but as recurring phases that lingered through large portions of the tidal cycle. Recognizing how often those episodes already occur makes it necessary to examine the physical forces that drive them. Tides and heat set the...

Mangrove forests are short of breath The tidal environment of mangrove forests serves as nurseries for many fish species. Researchers at the University of Gothenburg have measured carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in 23 of world’s mangrove areas. The study sends out a warning that these ecosystems are increasingly threatened as sea temperatures continue to rise.

The small area of mangrove that I was able clear of the insidiously snagged fishing line and a fearful hook.

The cleared cut fishing line including a ballon ribbon that was so trapped I had to cut it free as well. If a bird or reptile or fish or eel got caught in this line, no way would they get free without human help. The line cannot be snapped with brute strength, I tried…drew blood on my finger. The only way is a sharp knife or scissors. I now carry a multi-tool just for this purpose.

Mothers Of Change: All-Women Team Of 100 Volunteers Clears 600 Kg Of Trash From Mangroves In Navi Mumbai Cleanup Mumbai: An all-women team of over 100 volunteers cleaned mangrove forests near Sarsole Jetty in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. The cleanup drive, the 290th such initiative by Environment Life Foundation and supported by the Mangrove Foundation, removed 600 kg of trash from the shores. The rubbish collected included medical discards, cosmetic containers, plastic grocery packaging, thermocol, footwear, school bags, backpacks, single-use cutlery, plastic pens and toys. The drive not only focused on removing marine litter but also encouraged citizens to adopt sustainable habits and protect the fragile mangrove ecosystem. The trash chokes the mangroves, an ecologically rich natural system that also acts as a buffer during natural disasters. Dharmesh Barai, founder of Environment Life Foundation, said that women play a crucial role in bringing about social change. “If a woman understands the importance of environmental protection, she can influence her entire family. Civic responsibility begins at home, and women have the power to transform habits for a better future,” he said. The women participants shared the challenges they faced while taking part in such causes and spoke about how they are gradually changing their own habits and encouraging their families to adopt eco-friendly practices. The Mangroves Cleanup Drive has been...
