2/2 You can help curlews and other nesting birds by keeping dogs on a short lead to avoid disturbing their nests, and by keeping the moors safe from wildfire by not lighting BBQs, campfire or smoking near the moors. If you see smoke or fire on the moors, call 999.

1/2 Happy #WorldCurlewDay!

It’s always a joy to see and hear curlews in the uplands of the Peak District & South Pennines. They have a long curved beak used for finding invertebrates in peat & mud, and a call often described as “bubbling” as it makes the call which gives it its name: “cur-lew!”.

2/3 Like some other upland birds, lapwings lay their eggs directly onto the ground, in a simple "scrape" which is guarded carefully by the parent birds.

A lapwing is flying, facing left, in the middle of the image against a background of green and brown grass. It has dark coloured wings, with white on the underside of the wings and dark coloured wing tips, and a white tummy and face. There is a dark stripe around its neck and under its eye to match its black beak, and a dark coloured crest on its head.

Yesterday, we were joined by our partners from Yorkshire Water for a day sphagnum planting. The wintry weather was very changeable, so we take our hats off to these hardy volunteers for braving cold winds and rain, sleet and snow showers to plant 2140 sphagnum plugs.
