Friday 17th April
Started my walk off with this Giant House-spider 'Eratigena' on a brick wall along the F&C Canal, Maryhill.....and it was indeed a giant! One of the biggest ones i've ever seen.

Pseudoscorpions are starting to be easier to find now the weather's warming up. I carried on surveying churchyards all through winter & kept drawing blanks. Re-visits in April have proved very successful with several 'blank' churchyards now having records. Even got another East Norfolk Roncus!

Agreed. Not 1700's, also no spiders, but I have a 1912 (1st 1887)edition of The Young Collector - Ants,Bees,Dragon-Flies,Earwigs,Crickets, and Flies. The writing style is great. Particularly like the section on Pulex irritans. "Familiar to every one" sounds so casual and everyday but also personal.

An image of a page from the text that reads "The hinder part of the body of this insect is joyned to the fore-part only by a small thread, and cover'd with a thin skin, on which are hairs of divers colours: it contains the Back, Belly, Parts of Generations, and the Anus. I shall apply my self more particularly to the Description of the Aunus, as being the Part from whence the Spiders draw their Silk; it not being my design to give a Genral Description of this Insect, but only to speak of their Silk, and the Usefulness of it. It is certain, that all Spiders spin their THread from the Aunus; about which there are five Papillae, or small Nipples, which at first sight one would take for so many Spindles, that serve to form the Thread: I have found these Papillae to me Muscular, and furnished with a Sphincter. A little within these I have observ'd two others, from the middle of which issue several Threads, in a pretty large quantity, sometimes more, and sometimes less, which the Spiders make use of...

Nobody talks about how much fun it is to read science from the 1700's. This is from Francois Xavier Bon's "A Discourse on the Usefulness of the Silk of Spiders", published in Philosophical Transactions Volume 27, in 1710. "Parts of Generations" is wonderfully euphemistic.

a Uloborus spider wrapping prey

these spiders lack a venom apparatus (rare in the spider world!), and instead secure their prey in a tidy silken ball, combined with toxic digestive fluids!

look closely and you can see silk strands coming from the spinnerets

A (what I assume to be juvenile) Larinioides sp. resting on a wall.

This spider is likely looking for a place to build its magnificent orb web. Usually found near windows around my area.

Look who I disturbed while tidying the garden! She looks frightened. Sorry! Looks like she’s ready to pop. I put her somewhere nice and safe.

The number of times I’ve checked this old gate post for spiders! And it’s finally paid dividends with Marpissa muscosa. On the Ouse Cut Off Channel.

Nice. Guess it lives up to it's name. Seived from deciduous leaf litter as you say. Been a while since I looked at a liny, forgot to check both the sites I use! Thanks 👍

Any suggestions? Best photo I have with this 2mm liny'. Simply not clear enough for me to ID. Woodland habitat, reddish legs. Hopefully someone can recognise the mantis shape. If not will keep for it for when I have better scope. Ta

#Spider interest with the wildlife group on Wednesday - Zora spinimana aka Ghost Spider, thanks Nigel C-H for that one. Next I don't know what the spider is but its external parasite might be an ichneumon wasp of the genus Polysphincta. I didn't find either of these. #ukwildlife
