Scott Lavene’s debut using his own name is another stunner. The title track rightfully gets most of the plaudits, but this is exquisite from start to finish.

OK - I need all the #5debutalbums peeps to delete their lists and put Fat Freddy’s Drop as their number 1 🤪. That moment when Wellington’s vibe captured a whole nation and the whole nation’s vibe was captured by a band from Wellington.

I haven’t heard 189 of the Top 200. If each album is say 50 minutes long on average, that’s 6½ days listening to this list in ‘26 just to catch up.

Didn’t get round to playing Osmium for #5debutalbums. Wish I had. This compilation is the majority of Osmium with three stellar substitutes.

Last one tonight for #5debutalbums was this 1981 (Aus)/1982 (US) record. They came off as a bit kitchy, but they really did stick. Their 2nd try is even better IMO. I play both rather frequently. #johnsvinyl #wasplayinhg

The last L for #5debutalbums is this eponymous Canadian pop rocker from 1980. Loverboy was one of those bands that were acceptable to (& even liked by) a wide audience from hard rockers to new wavers. Their tidy pop songs have a nice edge. #johnsvinyl #nowplaying

The front cover of Tall Dwarfs 1981 EP Three Songs.

I don’t pretend to be a massive Chris Knox fan. But he’s important to NZ music and I love a lot of stuff I’ve heard randomly. But Tall Dwarfs only released EPs from 1981 - 1990. So their #5debutalbums came 8 years into the bands career. Remind me when that bracket comes up!
