If you are doing a lot of social media, especially Twitter, or running an event your covering with social media, look at desktop/laptop apps such as Tweetdeck and Hootsuite, to organise and schedule content.

Remember to tweet/post about events (using an event hashtag on Twitter) before, during and after an event.

Promote beforehand, report from during and refer back to afterwards.

I add credits to the image itself. This way, when someone copies the image (as they often do) the credit stays with the image

An example of the different formats: if I used the image I prepared for Twitter on Instagram, the sides, along with key branding, would be lost. So I created a new version just for IG

Different platforms use different formats for their photos - so learn them to maximise your tweets and posts. Search online for details for the platforms you use

Use the right image format! Twitter uses landscape 2:1. If you don’t you can end up cutting off your subject’s head and feet!

The new feature ‘Twitter threads’ is great for presentations (like this one) as it links (threads) all your tweets (up to 25) in to one continuous story

Avoid poor structuring (e.g. adding tags, handles and URL as one block at end of the text) use these throughout the text. Also, now Twitter has more characters you can break tags and handles up so they stand out.

Understand what you want from social media, and what your community needs are. Twitter is the most dynamic, but Facebook has greater take-up, especially in Asia, South America and Africa.

In #ornithology Twitter is the platform of choice. We’ve tracked its rise and reach using the #ornithology tag since 2012. By the end of 2017, thousands of accounts engaged with the tag with a reach of over 1 million.

Great advice from @dfgillie discussing ‘career’ from childhood, through PhD and beyond. There is such a thing as ‘luck’. Knowing it and knowing what to do with it are important. Be confident. Use feedback. Network. Use your skills to analyse jobs and what you want. #acceshef18
