Glow-based assay sheds light on disease-causing mutations University of Michigan researchers create a way to screen protein structure changes caused by mutations that may lead to new rare disease therapeutics.

There are several methods to identify protein structure changes. An #asbmbJBC paper via Michael Wang’s lab has added a new tool to the list that provides quantifiable results, suitable for high throughput screens when researchers just need to know if a protein structure is altered.

E-cigarettes drive irreversible lung damage via free radicals E-cigarettes are often thought to be safer because they lack many of the carcinogens found in tobacco cigarettes. However, scientists recently found that exposure to e-cigarette vapor can cause severe, irreversible lung damage.

“E-cigarette juice can have a nicotine concentration as high as 150 millimolar ... And we saw that (lung) toxicity occurs at micromolar levels (1000 times less). It’s just off the scale.”
