CAPITAL FROM THE SUMMA CAVEA, 75-120 CE. COLOSSEUM This richly-carved Corinthian capital is not exactly Corinthian. It seems Domitianic in execution and in invention. Though it has been subjected to the systematic breakage that marks a piece of marble destined for the kilns, we can still see the main detail of a Medusa head, two snakes tied under her chin and with wings atop her head. Medusa's head is on a shield held up by the sinuous curves of a much larger snake. Pieces of wings to the right and left of the shield suggest the former presence of fully rounded Pegasi which have been knocked off. The Pentelic marble is an expensive Greek import, suitable for what was intended as a palace of entertainment for the people, lavishly decorated. In fact this comes from the summa cavea, the highest section of seating, where even women were allowed.

#ReliefWednesday finds us at the #Colosseum where this massive #Corinthian #capital testifies to the exuberant #Flavian #Baroque of the original decoration. From a base of #acanthus emerges a shield with a #Gorgon head, and #Pegasi at the corners, a real flight of fancy. #AncientBluesky 🏺

MOSAIC FLOOR WITH MONTHS AND SEASONS, C. 375 CE. BRITISH MUSEUM Here we see a detail of a fragmentary floor discovered in 1857 in Roman Carthage, the shipping hub of North Africa in the late western empire. At the corners of the floor are representations of the seasons: here we see Summer wreathed with grain, her large-eyed beautiful face modelled with subtle shading. She's glancing leftward and is wearing earrings and a gold necklace, a tunic with a gold stripe on the shoulder, and a red stola over her shoulders. A wonderful ribbon frame surrounds two sides of this detail. Springing upward toward the centre of the floor is a leafy stalk, and to either side acanthus leaves curl against a white background.

MOSAIC PAVEMENT, LATE C3-C4 CE. EXCAVATIONS UNDER THE OSPEDALE DI S. GIOVANNI IN LATERANO This detached and fragmentary mosaic pavement comes from a room facing onto a garden, in a small domus backing onto the huge domus of the Annii Veri and possibly, at the time of the making of this mosaic, incorporated into the larger domus, by then part of the imperial demesne. It has a geometric design with black blocks set in a brick pattern surrounded by "mortar" in white mosaic. The border has black and coloured designs including four busts representing the Seasons, of which one and a half survive. Here we see the probable figure of Winter, head in a white hood.
