What keeps Toxoplasma gondii’s apicoplast functioning? A newly identified protein, TgGloL, may be key. Though it resembles a glyoxalase, TgGloL plays a unique role in parasite growth and organelle stability. www.molbiolcell.org/doi/10.1091/... #ASCB #Parasites #CellBiology #Apicoplast #Toxoplasma
Take-home message:
PfAnchor is essential for apicoplast fission and inheritance in malaria parasites. Targeting this process could open up new avenues for antimalarial therapies!

These 4 enzymes have been included in all the minimal translation machinery concepts proposed to date. The discovery of only these 4 enzymes in #apicoplast of #Plasmodium puts us a step closer to our big picture of establishing apicoplast as minimal translation model.
Before going in to details, interesting fact! #apicoplast genome contains the minimal complete set of tRNAs among all known living systems, making it a #good #model to study minimal #translation system. We intend to establish that.
xm5s2U #tRNA modification is crucial for proper protein #translation, especially in a translation system with minimal components. We have described the players of xm5s2U34 biosythesis in #Plasmodium #apicoplast. Read the story to find out why parasites need this and how we did it. 1/6
