For a long while, she was silent, listening to the distant sounds of the farmers’ market coming to life. Despite the chilly spring air, she basked in the growing warmth of the sun, which twinkled off the last sheets of ice at their feet. And then she saw it: shoots of green and white pushing up through the snow. All around them, the first flowers of the season defied the slurry of frozen mud. Alfira pointed out the clusters of delicate, bell-shaped buds. “Do you know what those are?” “Mmm, ‘fraid not,” Lakrissa murmured. “They’re called snowdrops,” Alfira said with a hint of reverence in her voice. “They’re the first flowers to bloom in spring, when it’s still cold and icy. They’re a sign of the end of hard times. Renewal of hope. A little triumph over a hard winter.” She felt Lakrissa shift and sit up to view the flowers properly. “Pretty,” she said simply. “Like you.”

Text: The door from the sewers into the basement of Crimson Draughts is unlocked, which on any other day Astarion might put down to carelessness, even though Dal is rarely careless. But his earlier unease is still present. He hesitates before stealing inside, then waits, attuning himself to the sounds and smells before creeping closer to the staircase. A low, murmur of conversation comes from upstairs. It could be that Oblodra woman with Dal, he supposes. She does still own the place. But the smell is wrong. He slinks up a couple more steps. 'So how are things going in the Underdark?' Dal’s voice might sound normal to anyone who doesn’t know her. But they’ve shared too much for Astarion to miss the telltale quiver in her tone. She’s scared.
