But here we are now, in a little Ryokan with our very own hot spring in the garden outside. I'm still not very fond of bathtubs, but bathing in a hot-water pond is different. And it sounds divine.
As Astarion puts down our luggage, I open the sliding door to the garden, taking it all in. It's surrounded by high bamboo walls with climbing plants creating lush and green walls.
There are small trees, bushes, and traditional Kozakuran stone lanterns lining a path through the garden that leads to an inviting stone bench beneath a red maple tree.
The hot spring sits on the left side of the garden, bubbling softly where the water exits through crevices in the earth below. Puffs of steam drift up from it, dissolving in the crisp evening air, and a shishi-odoshi breaks the serene quiet every once in a while with a sharp tock.
Excuse me while I geek out about outside Onsen and Japanese gardens...
